Solution to the PPP Down router issue READ NOW

I have found a solution to the notorious PPP down problem.

From the information I can gather PPP down occurs because the ADSL circuit at the ISP (Sri Lanka Telecom) does not support the router ADSL TYPE. Even though we connect and use it but the ADSL TYPE is requesting FULL Line Quality which the SLT circuit cannot offer.

What I mean by TYPE is the ADSL Modulation type. Most routers off the market are configured to be ADSL2 or ADSL2+ which is NOT what SLT expects. SLT said its G.Dmt .

Why not ADSL2 or ADSL2+ ? because these are used for very fast Broadband! not for a 512Kpbs of 2048Kbps line. If you use ADSL2 or ADSL2+ what will happen is the smallest disturbance on the line causes packets to mismatch and because of the circuit type conflict results in a PPP Down

What I did to solve the problem is really simple.

1. Went into the Router Config through 192.168.1.1
2. Advanced Settings -> DSL (ADSL for Prolink I believe)
3. Unticked all boxes except G.Dmt
4. Applied changes

What I noticed is that I have improved my speed as well. In my router (and all routers I have tested) the speed showed as 508Kbps and 124Kbps but when I did the above, the speed went upto 512Kpbs and 128Kbps! Not much, but it confirmed the setting that I am in now is the CORRECT mode for my ADSL line.

My Router was set up by SLT (for peo TV and Stuff) and they never changed the settings.

Someone need to poke a SLT Engineer to respond to this. May be I am wrong... It also seems after the setting change, the IP change from SLT (Every 10 hours) is TRULY unnoticeable (previously, connections dropped and stuff).

Probably the routers provided by the SLT are configured that way. I couldn't find such a setting in this crappy ZTE router. But I remember the old D-Link router had the option.

also notice there are two settings as well as called

SRA: SRA software allows modems to make seamless data transfer rate changes to avoid dropping a connection.

Bitswapping: adapts to errors on the line:

As line conditions change, bit swapping allows the modem to swap bits around different channels, without retraining, as each channel becomes more or less capable. If bit swapping is disabled then this does not happen and the modem needs to retrain in order to adapt to changing line conditions.

well in this case speed does not improve but internet connecting speed is improved since it dont try to connect on other DSl bands... this way when u on the router it connects to the internet soon..
