Sri Lanka 6th in global rankings of using pirated software
Some 90 % of computers in Sri Lanka used pirated software last year, placing the country sixth in the global software piracy ranking, an anti-piracy advocacy body said.
Director-Marketing in the Asian Region of US-based Business Software Alliance (BSA) Roland Chan told reporters in Colombo on Wednesday that this co-relates to a loss of US$ 93 million for the software companies while globally they lost US$ 47.8 billion due to pirated software. This was among the findings of the 2007 piracy study conducted by the BSA and IDC, a market survey company. It has also been found that some of the most frequently pirated software is among the cheapest while the more expensive software is acquired legitimately. Identification of un-licensed software is very easy and can lead to corporate liability if a company is found to be running pirated and un-licensed software. Mr. Chan said that software piracy will also result adversely on the local software industry.
