Sri Lanka foreign reserves rise 2.2-pct to US$2,755mn in April

ECOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s foreign reserves grew 2.2 percent to 2,755 million US dollar in April 2023 from 2,694 million US dollars in March, central bank data showed.

Sri Lanka’s rupee appreciated from around 360 to the US dollar to 320 and has since been at that level.

Sri Lanka has to increase net international reserves by 710 million US dollars by June 2023 under an International Monetary Fund deal.

By April gross reserves have risen by around 859 million dollars.


To buy reserves from inflows (central bank has to take in deposits in dollars against rupee) Sri Lanka has to keep interest rates high enough so that that the rupees are not invested or spent and can be mopped up (domestic investment has to be curtailed).

Sri Lanka in the first quarter had liquidity shortages to absorb the rupee and prevent their loaning by banks.

However the liquidity shortages are easing, through private credit demand is negative. (Colombo/May04/2023)

Do not talk about personalities or Politics which is the bane of the country. Good policy needed to be appreciated irrespective of party politics which is hard thing in Sri Lanka.
If we provide incentives we can attract remittances from our employees abroad and we can breath fresh air! but in the long run that is not enough we need painful reforms in key sectors and it will be hard the road ahead.

The good things
Tourism has gone up, foreign remittance has gone up.. That's about it

Got loans from IMF & ADB.. that's all Ranil knows. Adding more loans..

Local currency wise.

Good that we are not printing money anymore. Tax increase is good but could've done it in a better way

ECB bill structure is mad. Increasing the bill is ok but this is just putting all the CEB's in effectiveness, inefficiency, corruption on the consumers shoulders.

All the government agencies should be reformed.

Ranil will never curb corruption or have plans to get foreign income. The only thing he knows is to sell & get loans

But we need this guy to do the reforms.

So let's wait for Ranil to do the reforms of the government departments, where as no one else will be allowed to do it or will not do it

Then whenever they hold elections again, will vote to kick the guy out & get the jeppo in to put a stop on corruption & try to start even a small system change
