Hi
A transgender is a person whose gender identity, gender expression does not match with their assigned biological gender. Basically transgender people feel as they born in a wrong body or they stuck in wrong body or something like that. And also "transgender" is a term of one's gender identity. not a term of sexual orientation. Trans people can be heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual. And the most important things are it's not a mental illness that can be cured or it's not their choise.
I saw some where A LGBT organization estimates that between 0.1% and 0.25% of the population is transsexual. But i never (officially) met a transgender in sri lanka and my doctor said he only met less than 50 transgenders in sri lanka in his service. I think trans people in countries like sri lanka refuse come out because of some social, cultural and religeos problems.
I'm 21 years old transgender and i came out to my family in this feb. Though my family understant my situation and accept me (thanx to my psychiatrist) i never try to start my transition in sri lanka because of those problems.
