Student shot dead in eastern university

A first year student of the eastern University was shot dead late night, Thursday, Police said.

The student was from Pothuhera, Kurunegala.

Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara confirmed the incident and said that the shooting had taken place inside the university.

The body is due to be removed to the Valachchenai hospital.

Police and TMVP cadres have visited the scene of the incident.

The incident comes in the wake of students from the south selected to the eastern university located at Vandaramullai refusing to register there due to security reasons.

A final-year student from Kurunagala, studying at the Eastern University of Sri Lanka (EUSL) at Vanthaa'rumoolai was shot and killed by unknown armed men Thursday around 9:15 p.m. Ea'raavoor Police said they were investigating whether the killing had any connection to an incident in which a Tamil girl was allegedly ragged at the EUSL, a few days ago.

The victim was identified as 27-year-old H.M.S.P Samarasinghe, a native of Poththugara in Kurunagala district.

The slain student has been studying at the EUSL for the past three years with 16 fellow Sinhala students at his level, according to the EUSL students representatives.

181 Sinhala students have been admitted to the EUSL for 2007-2008. The EUSL is situated 18 km north of Batticaloa city.

Eastern University Vice-chancellor Dr. V. Pathmanathan on Friday suspended all educational activities temporarily and made arrangements to send the Sinhalese students in the university safely to Polonnaruwa district first and from there to their homes, on instructions from the University Grant Commission (UGC), the VC said. The UGC has taken this decision after consulting the local heads of the government armed forces after a Sinhalese student was shot and killed Thursday by unidentified armed men.

The VC said that transport facilities have been organized for more than 180 students to be sent to their home towns.(so sinhalese students must leave the uni)

The exact cause behind the slaying of the Sinhalese student is not known and there have been no threats or intimidation to any of the students, the VC said.

On being asked whether the killing was due to ragging in the university, Dr. Pathmanathan said that though he had heard about the ragging he had not received any written complaints on it.

(perhaps , this sinhalese student was involved of ragging that tamil female student. So some sources describe this is an action against (a punishment) the student thugs who involve in the ragging..)

A final-year management student of the Eastern University at Vandaramulla in Eravur, Batticaloa was shot and killed at his hostel by an unidentified gunman around 9:15 last night (August 21st).

The victim, identified as 27-year-old H.M.S.P Samarasinghe, was a resident of Pothuhera in Kurunegala district.

The victim has died on the spot and four empty pellets have been found from the crime scene, police say.

The body of the undergraduate is currently being kept at Batticaloa Hospital.

According to reports from the area, ragging of newcomers is now taking place at the Eastern University, and a warning pamphlet against the practice has been issued by the ‘Cultural Department’ of TMVP political party on August 19th.

It had warned ‘stern action’ against those who indulge in ‘anti-cultural’ and ‘humiliating activities against women’, reports further say.

looks lyk he had been warned b 4. he had been ragging girls inside da university although it had been illegal looks lyk. i have a cousine also studying in da Eastern uni. still cudnt contact him and ask wat had happened. ill try to contact him and get to know da reason if possible!
