Taare Zameen Par was also India's official entry for the
81st Academy Awards Best Foreign Film category
[6] but was not chosen for the short list.
[7] Jury member and director Krishna Shah stated that
Taare Zameen Par was rejected from the Oscar shortlist due to its
musical format and length. He also commented that he conveyed these critiques to Khan.

NDTV that he was "not surprised" that
Taare Zameen Par was rejected from the Oscar shortlist
[9] arguing that:
I don’t make films for awards. I make films for the audience. The audience, for which I have made the film, really loved it and the audiences outside India have also loved it. What I am trying to say is that film has been well loved across the globe and that for me it is extremely heartening and something that I give very high value to.
[10] CNN-IBN honored Khan with "Entertainer of the Year," noting that: "The year 2008 belonged to an actor who managed to gather critical and commercial acclaim like none other [...] Though the story of little Ishaan's struggle with dyslexia didn't make it to the Oscar race, it's a tale that has touched over a million hearts. Released towards the end of 2007, Aamir Khan's directorial debut
Taare Zameen Par continued its dream run in 2008 collecting several awards and matching it with commercial success as well.
