TNA supports Tiger air strikes JHU demands arrest of Tamil MP
By Gagani Weerakoon & Yohan Perera

The TNA told parliament yesterday the LTTE air operations were only for its protection and definitely not to attack any other powerful country like India.

Speaking at the debate on the extension of the state of emergency, TNA front-liner S. Gajendran congratulated the LTTE for its ‘successful’ air strikes.

“This is only to attack identified enemy targets within Sri Lanka and not to attack India. The government had said the LTTE air power was a threat to India as well. But we are certain the LTTE ‘air force’ was set up only to protect us in the northeast and not to attack any other powerful country like India,” Mr. Gagendran said

Minister Dinesh Gunawardena seeking a clarification from Deputy Speaker Geethanjana Gunawardene asked whether Mr. Gajendran was making this controversial speech on behalf of the TNA or the LTTE.

“It is extremely controversial because he assured India that the Tiger air power was not a threat to India. He said ‘their’ air force is only targeting ‘their enemy’ targets. I wonder whom he speaks for?” Mr. Gunawardena said.

He asked whether the Speaker should allow MPs to make such statements in the House to which Deputy Speaker replied saying he would ask the Speaker to hold an immediate Party Leaders’ meeting on the matter.

Meanwhile, JHU leader Ven. Ellawela Medhananda Thera demanded the immediate arrest of Mr. Gajendran for making an anti-constitutional statement.

While describing the SLFP proposals as ‘low’ and ‘shameless’, MP Gajendran, tore the set of proposals during his speech.

“I ask the government to dip these pieces in water and drink it so that they could get some sense even after doing that,” Mr. Gajendran said while noting the government was forcing Tamil people into a war by such proposals.

He said the LTTE has already established an administration in the North and East and urged the Sri Lankan government to recognize the Eelam State.

“I would like to urge the government to release the six Jaffna students who were abducted by government forces and bring to an end the Jaffna University strike,” he said.
