The spacecraft currently used by NASA is the Space Shuttle. Although referred as the Space Shuttle it's official name was the Space Transport System. The shuttle is due to be relived of its duties in the year 2010.
Here are some info and pics about this marvellous piece of engineering.
The maiden flight was on 12th April 1981 and has had 128 launches since then.
The space shuttle's components include: the orbiter, three main engines, the external tank, and two solid rocket boosters. Altogether, the launch weight is about 4.5 million pounds.
It is estimated that each of launch the shuttle cost roughly about US$1.5 billion and sice its initiation the Space Shuttle program has cost about US$170 billion.
The components in a nutshell
Andeavour
Atlantis
Discovery
The Cockpit
This machine will be sadly missed by many from next year onwards!!!!
