Beeton’s Christmas Annual , 1887…… a story published as “ A Study In Scarlet” Most of the publishers didn’t like to hold any responsibility for this story. All of them thought “ it’s just nothing, but a newcomer’s unsuccessful approach to the field”. No one thought that this story would contribute for a new born of an immortal character to the whole world.

From the 1st publish, in every readers’ mind, there was a great character…… yes, it’s Sherlock Holmes. He had such uncommon characteristics. Smoking all the day, solving problems using his sharp eyes and brain, smiling at the stupidity of the police department, even his best friend Dr. Watson. He was capable of recognizing every single man’s ‘occupation’ just after watching his behavior and clothing. He solved every secret which came to him, and spent his day-to-day life as normal as he did. But all the publicity went to the Scotland-Yard Police.. he never cared about publicity.

Presently this excellent detective’s stories have been translated to more than 60 languages worldwide. He never tried to leave his own kingdom, London. But his talent has gone so far. His image has been re-created by every kind of media.

In many countries people have gathered and made various “ friends’ societies” using the name “ Holmes”. In United States of America (USA), a large scale of friends’ society annually celebrates Sherlock Holmes Birthday ( 6th January 1854) and even searched for Holmes’s address( No:221B, baker Street, London). When reading these things, you may think these people are completely forgot, that this character is not real, its just a legend. They even believe, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is ‘the guy’ , who mentioned as Dr. Watson . They call each-other from the names, coming from Sherlock Holmes stories… annually celebrate Holmes’s special days, and even write poems, scolding to Holmes’s enemy Prof. Moriarty.

A book shop owner, 73, living in Santa Fe , John Bennett Shoe , the librarian of this society, owns about 12000 books written about Sherlock Holmes. He has Holmes’s photographs, watches made in Holmes’s shape, pillow cases, stockings, flower vases, pen, cloths etc:.. and even in his refrigerator he has chocolates made in Holmes’s shape.

As Shoe says..” though Sherlock Holmes is a character coming from Britain’s Literature, most of the researches have done by Americans…” . they say, his address is not No:221B, Baker Street, it’s No:111…….

Even a former president of United States of America, Franklin Roosevelt, had joined this society and argued to ensure.” Sherlock Holmes’s an American”…..

Among thousands of characters coming from western literature, how Sherlock Holmes getting this much attraction day-by-day? Is it all about his personality?
