Shanmugalingam Sivashankar[citation needed] (Tamil: சன்முகலிங்கம் சிவசங்கரன், Sinhala: ෂන්මුගලින්ගම් ෂිවශන්කර්), also known as Pottu Amman (Tamil: பொட்டு அம்மான், Sinhala: පොට්ටු අම්මාන්) was a Sri Lankan Tamil militant. Before his death he was in the wanted list of Interpol for terrorism.[1] He was indicted by the Indian government's Jain Commission for involvement in the assassination of the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Pottu Amman was the head of the intelligence wing of the LTTE (Tiger Organization Security Intelligence Service, TOSIS) and also is the head of the Black Tiger squad. He joined the LTTE in 1981 along with Colonel Soosai, and was second in LTTE's military wing after leader Velupillai Prabhakaran. Pottu Amman was trained and was the head of a coastal camp in Vedaranyam in Tamil Nadu where he was kidnapped by rival PLOTE cadres and later freed in 1985.[2]
He is also believed to have been in charge of planning the LTTE's covert operations and was the brain behind most of the LTTE successful military operations and was seen as a hardliner in favour of an independent Tamil Eelam. Pottu Amman is known for his military expertise.[3] He was an "introvert," who was rarely seen in public and is known to the public by his nom de guerre rather than by his real name.
Pottu Amman was killed in Mullaittivu on May 18, 2009, by Sri Lankan armed forces while trying to flee the war area. The Sri Lankan government confirmed that he was killed when a rocket hit the armored-plated van he was riding in after a two-hour firefight. Troops removed and identified his body along with the bodies of rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, Sea Tiger commander Colonel Soosai, as well as other rebel fighters.
