The main problem is that it contradicts the Qur'an itself. In various places Muhammad admitted he could not or did not have to perform miracles to prove himself. When asked to perform miracles his response was:
Glory be to my Lord; am I aught but a mortal messenger?
Qur'an 17:93

In another place Muhammad put the following words into the mouth of Allah:
And those who disbelieve say: Why has not a sign been sent down upon him from his Lord? You are only a warner.
Qur'an 13:7

Good post. Takes us straight to an interesting question. I want to add the following hadith also.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "There was no prophet among the prophets but was given miracles because of which people had security or had belief, but what I was given was the Divine Inspiration which Allah revealed to me. So I hope that my followers will be more than those of any other prophet on the Day of Resurrection."

So it seems that on several occasions when being demanded to show miracles, Muhammad has said that he is merely a man and he cannot perform miracles. He claimed only miracle he has is the quran.

So who ever is relating the words "split the moon" to an incident of Muhhammad literally spliting the moon and thereby performing a miracle, something which he claims he is not able to do in Quran, is altering the the message of allah.

Things to consider here are

(1) Muhammad claims he is just a messenger, a mortal and cannot perform miracles. This is clearly said in quran itself (17:90 - 17:95, 15:6 - 15:8, etc). And also in hadiths (Bukhari 9:92:379).

(2) The so called "split of the moon" is not actually directly mentioned in quran, but rather muslims interpreting a hidden meaning in words.

So which one is true?? Quran or the other one?

Nope prophet Muhammad(pbuh) could not perform miracles.....nor could any of the other Prophets(pbuh)...as they were mere mortals....

but they could pray to God.....and ask Him to perform these tasks due to their proximity to God (not literal)....and if God say it fit...He did perform such miracles for His prophets....to help them convey the message of His existence....

if i came to you and told i know Sanath Jayasuria for example wouldn't you ask proof of this connection...?.....

and i could request sanath etc to give you a call etc.....quite similar yet epically gigantic in fashion....

well.....that is what happened to Jesus....and Moses.....

that is one of the major reasons Christianity and Jewish came to be....if ppl were not reminded of that fact and every miracle came to be.....

the mere messenger then becomes the God....

and dangling shiny things in front of the eyes to sway the heart is one of the deeds of Satan....not a noble God....

True story behind the picture...

First, have a look on the picture and then the curve of horizon. The horizon is perfectly straight geometrically implying that the feature is extremely small even cannot be visible from Earth. There are countless features on the Moon like this rift valley or fault line; collectively they cannot contribute to the evidence of Moon-split.

Second, in the geological time scales, scientists ironically mean the time periods in millions and sometimes billions of years. The 1,500 years may be ancient times for historians, but it’s extremely recent for geological history of Earth and Moon. The major significant quakes along with meteorite bombardment from the space ended some 3.16 billion years ago. Apollo 17 astronauts visited the ‘recent’ large impact site, namely Tycho crater, it is an impact crater with the age of 100 million years. The same holds true for the mentioned fault line.


Third, because there is no more tectonic activity or atmospheric and geological erosion on the surface of the Moon, unlike Earth, the fingerprints of any activity even millions of years old can withstand for billions of years with minor changes, unless any other greater impact overlaps it. We do not see any ‘scar’ of Moon’s split while normally the scars on Moon’s face do not heal for millions of years contrary to human time frames.

Fourth, moonquakes are no indication of the Moon-split, at least not recently. The seismic activity is recorded about 100 millionth of Earth’s seismic activity actually is generated due to smaller impacts, and not because of significant internal processes. What observable results on the Moon would you expect when the underquestion moonquake was so intense that it could nicely overcome the force of gravity of such a large celestial body? Moonquake and Moon-split are events of completely different magnitudes, so their effects on Moon must also be theorized differently. If we found the evidence of moonquake, is this enough evidence of Moon-split? A semi-skilled not-so-careful individual can theorize the event illogically, misinterpret the data, and harm the concepts of laymen.


In a small telescope, if you observe closely,this kind of lines, or more appropriately ‘Ray Systems’, are also found in other parts of Moon, at different angles and places, and typically are the surface-related features. They form when the asteroids outburst the lunar material away from the impact in the shape of spikes, destined to last billions of years
