(Mr. O M Weerasooriya is a Retired Commissioner General of Inland Revenue and a Corporate Member of Sri Lanka Institute of taxation and former Treasurer of Netherlands Alumni Association of Lanka.)

A personal note:

Mr. O M Weerasooriya has done a wonderful job by writing this poem but there is something that we would like you to know.

A Developed country will collect 20 to 35% as taxes in this world.
A Developing country will collect 35 to 42.5% as taxes.

Today Sri Lanka collects 63% as taxes. Every 100 rupees you earn 63 rupees will go back to the government as taxes.
This means Sri Lanka is heading for disaster like Zimbabwe who collects a whopping 88% as taxes.

Support somebody who could change this at least to a developing level.

The Tax Poem

At first I thought this was funny...then I realized the awful truth of it.
Be sure to read all the way to the end as that's the punch line!

Tax his land, tax his bed,
Tax the table at which he's fed.
Tax his tractor, tax his mule,
Tax his cow, tax his goat,
Teach him taxes are the rule.

Tax his work, Tax his pay,
He works for peanuts Anyway!
Tax his pants, Tax his coat.
Tax his ties, tax his shirt,
Tax his work, tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco, tax his drink,
Tax him if he tries to think.
Tax his cigars, Tax his beers,
If he cries tax his tears.
Tax his car, Tax his gas,
Find other ways to tax his ass.

Tax all he has, then let him know
That you won't be done, till he has no dough.
When he screams and hollers;
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till he's good and sore.

Then tax his coffin, Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he's laid.
Put these words upon his tomb,
'Taxes drove me to my doom...'

When he's gone, do not relax,
Its time to apply the inheritance tax.

Accounts Receivable Tax, Airline surcharge tax
Airline Fuel Tax, Airport Maintenance Tax
Building Permit Tax, Cigarette Tax
Corporate Income Tax, Death Tax
Dog License Tax, Driving Permit Tax

STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?
Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, and our Nation was one of the most prosperous in the world.
We had absolutely no national debt, had a large middle-class, and Mom
stayed home to raise the kids. What in the hell happened?
Can you spell 'Politicians'?

I hope this goes around SRI LANKA at least 100 times!!!!!

YOU can help it get there!!!!

GO AHEAD - - - be a SRI LANKAN !!!!!!!!!!

SEND IT AROUND EVERYWHERE for a change

Help make a difference.

Settled in Aussie for good
moda katha kiyanna epa.

1) You have listed some 50 tax categories, as if a single person ever bears all of them at once.

2) Only the VAT and the Income tax are levied in major, on SL companies. Do you atleast know that VAT on sales can be offsetted against the VAT on purchases and therefore only that difference is paid?

3) Do you think a government tax its people, for fun? How the hell do you think for example we get a loaf of bread at Rs. 45 and not Rs. 100 as per the world market, if tax is not used to subsidize the food? Who do you think pays to maintain the roads, free education, school uniforms, subsidize diesel and petrol etc., etc., etc.,?

4) Didn't you know that your magic word "tax" was existing in the UNP regime and even during the colonial times, more than 100 years ago?

5) If the mom stays home, who pays for the house mortgage for example? Looks like you still live in the 1950s when people had kos and pol in ample. Come to 2010.

Atleast get your facts straight before trying to defame the image of SL, with a chain mail.
