Thera Gata – Verses of the Great Arahants

1.1.1. Subuti Thero’s stanza.

1. I am in a thatched hut. That hut is extremely comfortable. No harm coming from the wind. Rainy clouds, rain as much as you wish. My mind also consists of a fine concentration. I am free from defilements too. I am living with a great courage. Rainy clouds, rain as much as you wish now.

1.1.2. Senior Kotthita Thero’s stanza.

2. The senses of that Bhikkhu are tranquil. He lives abstained from all defilements. He speaks wisely too. There is no pride in him. Like a leaf in a tree is fallen by the wind, that Bhikkhu abandoned the childish defilements.

1.1.3. Kankhārēvata Thero’s stanza.

3. See the profound wisdom of the Thathāgatha Buddha who eliminates all the doubts of the people who come to him. It is like a sparkling fire in a dark midnight. It gives others the light of wisdom and the eye of the Dhamma.

1.1.4. Punhnha Thero’s stanza.

4. It is the wise gentlemen (Kalyānamitta) who show the good that should be associated with. Their wisdom is profound. Those wise people are the ones who practice the Dhamma without any delay. They have realized the extremely deep and difficult to comprehend trenchant meaning of the Four Noble Truths.

1.1.5. Dhabba Thero’s stanza.

5. The Exalted One disciplined a difficult to tame person. Now he is in a great joy without any frustration or doubt. He won the battle with defilements. Without any fear and startling, the “Dhabba” Bhikkhu will pass away bearing a concentrated mind on Nirvāna.

1.1.6. Seethavaniya Thero’s stanza.

6. That Bhikkhu stays in a forest called Seetha. He resides alone and spends his time in great happiness. He won the battle with defilements. Without any fear and startling, that wise Bhikkhu lives consciously about all of his bodily actions and protecting Kāyagathāsathi very well.

.1.7. Bhalliya Thero’s stanza.

7. He repelled the crew of Māra like a bridge is destroyed by a huge tidal wave. He won the battle with defilements. There is no fear in him now. He is tamed within the Dhamma. That Bhikkhu with a mind incorporated in the Nirvāna will pass away (Parinirvāna) ending the reincarnation.

1.1.8. Veera Thero’s stanza.

8. With the great quality of Purisadammasārathi, the Buddha tamed a difficult person to be controlled. He is in a great joy now. He does not have any doubt. He won the battle with defilements. Because that heroic Bhikkhu who lives without any fear and startling has a mind incorporated in the Nirvāna, he will pass away without be born again (Parinirvāna).

1.1.9. Pilindivachcha Thero’s stanza.

9. It is indeed a benefit that I gained by stepping into the Order of the Gautama Buddha. Of course, this arrival is not a disadvantage. I am not expressing a wrong view. If there is an esteemed and enduring Nirvāna in the well shown Dhamma, I attained that esteemed bliss (Nirvāna).

1.1.10. Punhnhamāsa Thero’s stanza.

10. That Bhikkhu gained the ultimate result of the Dhamma. He is calm. He has mastered his mind. He eradicated all the desires he had about others and him. He does not have any attachment to anything. That Bhikkhu now has a profound perception about the world that is being created and destroyed.
