I have 2 computers

one is AMD 32bit 2500MHz with 256MB Ram and 64MB GForce 2 AGP Graphic Card. Motherboard Brand Gigabyte AMD K7

Other one is P4 2400MHz with 256MB Ram and 128MB Radeon 9200 SE Graphic Card. Motherboard Brand is MSI Neo2.

Both PCs are installed same OS (From Same CD With Same Key) Windows XP Servise Pack 2. And Both MotherBoards are USB 2.0 rated.

But When I connect my Flash Drive which is USB 2.0 rated to my AMD machine, I got a ballon message from system menu saying that "This Device Can Perform Faster" heading. I think this is a common problem.

But when I connect the same flash drive into P4 machine, I dont get such a message.

When I get that Message, Speed of my flash drive is less than 2.0 So it takes more than 20min to copy 1GB of data. Its a terible case.

Can anyone Help me to get the advantages of USB 2.0 speed.
Any help appreciated.
Thnx in advanced.

Since he says it works at USB 2.0 speeds in one PC, the flash drive supports USB 2.0.

He already said he had SP2 installed.

Which ports did you plug the USB drive into? Maybe those ports don't support USB 2.0. These ports are usually the ports in the front of the chassis, not the ones on the back I/O panel. Do you get that message when you plug the drive into any of the ports?

If so, maybe you have to install the driver. These should be available on motherboard utility CD.

Or, maybe you have put the USB version to 1.0 or "Legacy" in BIOS. Change if it's applicable.

If you can tell the exact motherboard model, it might help. Eg: Gigabyte GA-7N400

And see if there is a question mark in any of the devices in the device manager. Might help if you can say what it is (if applicable).

i heard a scenario in some comps where if u enable the front USB ports then all the USB ports slow down.

it also could b a case whre its somhting wrong with the Pen drive like a virus.

else it could b a case where u dont have the proper drivers 4 either the pen or port

I don't think a virus could do that. Of course it might make things slow, but at least it would work in USB 2.0 mode. Besides, viruses love to move around quickly

yep that may b true. but there was one very annoying virus which workd in 3 steps

1. it copy's folder.htt and a desktop.ini file in every damn folder u have (This could slow things down)
2. it attaches with another virus making sure u cant open ur Pen. u hav 2 right clik anf select open 2 use it
3. It disables the pen and shows it as RAW data. u cant even format it and use it again

so its worth while updating ur virus guard and having a routine chekup

check you have installed chipset drivers for mobo properly from the motherboard utility CD. example Intell, VIA, MSI

it should say on the device manager under usb serial bus controler, intel824552 bla bla ENHANCED USB HOST CONTROLER installed.

    READ MORE http://www.everythingusb.com/usb2/faq.htm

    1. What is USB 2.0?
Finalized in 2001, Universial Serial Bus (USB) 2.0 is a complete overhaul of the Universal Serial Bus input/output bus protocol which allows much higher speeds than the older USB 1.1 standard did. The goal of the new serial bus is to broaden the range of external peripherals that can be used on a computer. A hard drive can easily hit the USB 1.1 bottleneck whereas it now becomes more 'usable' under USB 2.0 conditions.
To those people who found us via search engines, USB 2.0 should neither be called 'USB2' nor 'USB 2'.

    2. How do I know if my PC has USB 2.0?
You can identify whether your PC has Hi-Speed USB or not relatively easy. Open Device Manager and expand the Universal Serial Bus section. There should be an "Enhanced" USB host controller present.

Windows 98 systems may use a different name, because Hi-Speed USB drivers in these operating systems are not provided directly from Microsoft (Windows ME, 2000 and XP get their drivers through Windows Update).
These drivers are provided by the manufacturer, and may carry the maker's name (i.e. ADS, Belkin, IOGear, Siig, etc.). There should also be two "standard" version USB host controllers present as well. They are embedded in the USB chip which routes the differing USB speeds accordingly without user intervention.

There are currently 7 manufacturers of the Hi-Speed USB host silicon themselves:

    ALi (Acer Labs)
    Intel
    NEC
    SiS
    VIA
    nVidia (shows as "Standard" controller)
    Philips
Any other brand name that appears in Device Manager would likely be an add-in Hi-Speed USB PCI card. The makers above do not make add-in cards, but they do make the chips that are used in them.

    3. What happened to USB 1.1?

USB 1.1 allowed a maximum transfer rate of 12Mbits/second. It is now obsolete, but both of its speeds (1.5Mbps & 12Mbps) are being adopted into USB 2.0, and they are now called Original USB officially. Though some manufacturers label their products Full-Speed USB. Note that this seems a bit deceptive as it's easy to mistake Full-Speed for Hi-Speed. You won't be fooled from now on as you now aware that Full Speed USB is only 12Mbits/second where Hi-Speed USB mode is capable of a much faster 480Mbits/second.
Traditionally, USB mice and keyboards only need 1.5Mbps to function; exceptions are gaming input devices that require 12Mbps, and they include the Logitech G5, G7, G15 and Razer Copperhead. These higher-end gaming products send way more location feeds thru USB; hence, more bandwidth is required. Generally, the performance levels (1.5Mbps & 12Mbps) are grouped under 'Original USB' by the USB Promoter Group.

The logo shown on the right is authorized by the same organization to the vendors for use on their products should

The casing have nothing to do with the speed. It's a lack of functionality in the motherboard's south-bridge, that makes the front USB header not to support USB 2.0.

    That's what I said!!!

You said, "...dis is a common prob som casings are old...". It's not because of the casing that the front USB ports could be USB 1.1. It's because the motherboard doesn't have the headers which supports USB 2.0. "Casing" has nothing to do with it. It's just 4 wires from the USB port to the motherboard's header.

Ya u r correct Back panel usb ports working 2.0 speed. I pluged pen into back panel usb ports. Now problm solved...

Thnx everybody who try to help me...
