PC arrested for allegedly receiving 30,000 bribe
By Kurulu Kariyakarawana A Constable attached to the Marawila police station was nabbed by Bribery Commission officers yesterday for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs.30, 000 from an illicit liquor manufacturer not to take any action against him.
ASP Bribery Commission Investigation Division Somaweera Lokuge told Daily Mirror the PC who had caught an illicit liquor manufacturer with 30 Kasippu bottles had demanded Rs.30, 000 from him with the promise he would not be arrested.
The illicit liquor manufacturer had however pleaded with him to reduce the amount to Rs.10, 000 and the PC had agreed to that. He was then asked to come to the Marawila town with the money. The liquor manufacturer had however reported the incident to the Bribery Commission and the constable was arrested while receiving the money yesterday morning. He was produced before Marawila Magistrate and remanded until April 7.
Meanwhile two Excise officers attached to Dombawela, Udugampola Excise office were charged in the Colombo Chief Magistrates Court for taking a bribe of Rs.1500 related to a narcotics offense.
The first accused was ordered to pay Rs.6000 for each charge a fine of Rs.1500 and given a nine month sentence suspended for five years. The second accused was fined Rs.3000 for the two charges and given a nine month sentence suspended for five years. A three year sentence was ordered if the duo could not pay the fines.
