For dialup, the distance doesn't matter, because the voice frequency band is always there for any distance. Dialup uses the same voice frequency band of 0.3kHz-3.4kHz. In ADSL, they use a higher frequency band, and this depends on the distance. But again, for 512k connection, the distance doesn't really apply. For example, if you take my place, which is situated about 1.5-1.7km from the exchange, will get nearly as much as 8Mbps bandwidth. So if SLT gives 8M ADSL someday, I might be able to get it without being limited by distance.
