Sri Lanka vehicle imports down 26.4-pct in July: official data
Oct 20, 2009 (LBO) - Vehicle imports to Sri Lanka fell 26.4 percent in July from a year ago with motor cars down 74.7 percent, trucks and other goods transport vehicle falling 47.3 percent and three wheelers 35.3 percent, the latest official data shows.
In the seven months to July total vehicles imports were down 32.3 percent compared with the same period last year although the slump seems to have bottomed out and a recovery evident, according to data released by the Central Bank.
In July 2009, Sri Lanka imported 17,536 vehicles compared with 23,826 in the same month last year
But imports of some types of vehicles were higher than in June 2009.
In July 2009, 57 new buses were registered (72 in 2008), 472 cars (1,868 in 2008), 2,725 three-wheelers (4,211 in 2008), 684 goods transport vehicles (1,299 in 2008), 12,388 motorcycles (13,598 in 2008), and 1,084 (2,568 in 2008) land vehicles such as tractors.
In the January-July 2009 period, total imported vehicles fell to 108,529 from 160, 418 a year ago.
Bus imports were down to 253 (655 in 2008) in the seven-month period, motor cars 3,382 (10,208 in 2008), three wheelers 16,419 (21,140 in 2008), dual purpose vehicles 596 (1,586), motor cycles 59,927 (79,866), goods transport vehicles 2,856 (7,826) and land vehicles 7,560 (11,933).
The government has lifted restrictions imposed towards the end of 2008 on import letters of credit for vehicles, amid a balance of payments crisis.
Sri Lanka's economic growth slowed sharply earlier this year owing to the effects of the global economic downturn and the ethnic war.
But the Central Bank has raised growth forecasts after government forces defeated Tamil Tiger separatists in May, ending the 30-year ethnic conflict and an economic recovery is anticipated in the second half of the year.
