The Australian spoke to a group of nine uniformed men who emerged from several rooms in the hotel -- all carrying riot helmets and bags that appeared to hold weapons -- and who identified themselves as part of General Fonseka's private security detail before heading to a basement car park.
A man who identified himself as Rangna, and the "commander of the regiment" of 64 men, said he was expecting "a little bit of trouble".
Transparency International Sri Lanka said it was satisfied the country's sixth presidential elections were "in general, peaceful", although it pointed to widespread abuse of the state media by the government during the election campaign and on election day.
"At the end, the election was peaceful, which is a good characteristic of democracy," a spokesman told The Australian.
