The BBC Sherlock Holmes Collection (1968)

A three disc set combining the BBC dramatisations of six Sherlock Holmes mysteries, starring Peter Cushing and Nigel Stock. Includes: The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Sign of Four, The Blue Carbuncle, A Study in Scarlet and The Boscombe Valley. The series was filmed in colour and has the usual video/film mix of BBC series of the time. A careful and occasionally engaging series, but despite stellar casts, the acting was at times variable and the direction often tended to be stagy - in a stodgy theatrical way that was typical of BBC programmes of the time. Peter Cushing replaced Douglas Wilmer as Holmes in 1968 and he gave a cracking performance, but occasionally his talents weren't quite enough to make the episode shine.


Review:

Peter Cushing was no stranger to Sherlock Holmes when he inherited the role from Douglas Wilmer in the 1968 BBC TV series having previously played the character in the 1959 Hammer film version of 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'. Originally conceived as a big budget production the series ran to 16 episodes and adapted 15 of Conan Doyle's short stories and novels. The end result is somewhat lacking in certain departments and a long way from the standard of the later ITV Jeremy Brett series of the 1980's. Of the 16 episodes made only six survive and are all released in this BBC Box set. The surviving episodes are a mixed bag but probably representative of the series as a whole. As usual with BBC productions of the time they are a mix of videotaped studio material intercut with filmed inserts. The jarring difference in quality between the two mediums highlights the major problem with the series. The filmed material stands out as being better in terms of quality and production values than the studio scenes and lends a certain authenticity to the production. That said, there is a nice sense of period to many of the productions and Cushing himself appears to have researched the character well and unlike many of his predecessors plays up Holmes' less appealing qualities. Nigel Stock as Watson has been praised for his performance in so far as he played it straight instead of being the bumbling fool usually associated with Nigel Bruce in the 1940's film series. However, on the evidence of these 6 episodes he is still merely playing the feed for the main character and has very little to do often resorting to comic moments which appear out of place. Cushing is his usual professional self and certainly rises above the rest of the supporting cast which itself includes some familiar faces from British TV of the past - most notably James Beck of Dad's Army fame who gives an excellent performance in 'The Blue Carbuncle'. The stories themselves are reasonably faithful to their origins but suffer from some curious reworking in order to fit their allotted time slot. Picture and sound quality as generally very good considering the age of the material with no major problems.

A Study in Scarlet

The first Sherlock Holmes story written by Conan Doyle fits quite nicely into the single episode 50 minute format. The lengthy novel condenses well and omits much of the back story instead focusing on Holmes' investigation and adding a music hall sequence. The film/video sequences are less jarring as much of the story takes place at night or in dark rooms keeping a continuity that is lost in other episodes.

A Study in Scarlet was Doyle's first Holmes and Watson mystery (1886) and introduces the iconic address of Mrs Hudson's house at 221B Baker Street. A corpse is found in an empty house with the word 'Rache' scrawled on the wall next to it. The police arrest a suspect but then a similar murder occurs, proving that they have the wrong man. In exposing the real killer Holmes uncovers a feud stretching back to Salt Lake City and the Morman community.

The Boscombe Valley Mystery

A very substandard episode with very little action and some poor performances from all but Cushing and Stock. The episode has dated terribly with some groovy psychedelic special effects towards the end! The Boscombe Valley Mystery is rather more dated, especially with Watson being made to look stupid on more than one occasion but is enjoyable enough. The dated camera angles and some less than polished performances do grate occasionally, but the chemistry between Cushing and Stock rescues the episode more than once.

The Boscombe Valley Mystery is based on one of his Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes short stories of 1892 and features the murder of Charles McCarthy a farm tenant. The dead body of grumpy Bill McCarthy is found, brained with a rock, and his son James, with whom he did not get on, is arrested. James' girl-friend approaches Holmes, who discovers that Bill's dying words were nothing to do with "a rat" but concerned with the days of the Australian Gold Rush, decades earlier. It seems the culprit is clear but Holmes believes the truth is not so obvious...

The Hound of the Baskervilles

Classic two-part story starring Peter Cushing and Nigel Stock as the inquisitive pair, dealing first-hand with an horrific bestial menace. The story is presented in its original 2 episode format and manages to remain relatively faithful to the novel given the expanded running time. The main fault with the story is that Holmes is missing for much of the time and it falls upon Nigel Stock to carry the first episode alone. With a good deal of location footage shot on Dartmoor itself the production probably looks the best of the lot. Cushing is on good form and Nigel Stock makes a very good Watson showing that the Granada "get Watson right" ethic had been tried successfully, already. This version is much more in line with the novel than the excellent but tailored to theatrical Hammer version. For example, this Hound uses a young Dr Mortimer and has the novel version of Beryl Stapelton's relationship with her "brother" as well as Laura Lyons. Of course more fidelity to the novel means less of Mr Cushing onscreen.

Dr Mortimer, who has a general practice on Dartmoor, consults Holmes. His friend Sir Charles Baskerville has recently died, supposedly of a heart attack but Dr Mortimer links the death to the myth of the hound of the Baskervilles, which, centuries earlier, killed wicked Hugo Baskerville and is said to haunt each generation. Sir Charles' young heir and nephew Henry is returning from abroad and the doctor fears for his safety. Sir Henry has a boot stolen from his hotel room and is followed by a bearded man. Holmes sends Dr Watson off to Dartmoor with Mortimer and Henry, where he meets the butterfly collector and his sister Beryl, plus the very nervous housekeeper and valet to the Baskervilles, Mr. and Mrs. Barrymore, who appear to be signalling to someone on the moor... Sir Henry is apparently attacked and killed by the hound but the victim is actually an escaped convict, Seldon, Mrs Barrymore's brother, to whom she had given old clothes of Henry's and the dog, recognizing the scent from the boot stolen in London, had gone for him. Watson meets a disguised Holmes, living rough on the moors in order to survey the likely suspects. He believes he has seen the man who controls the hound and sets a trap for him with Sir Henry as its bait.

The Sign of Four

Another full length story which was compressed down to 50 minutes but this time doesn't work as well which is a shame is it is a great story. The Jeremy Brett adaptation remains the superior version but it is nice to see Cushing in some classic scenes although the entire second half is rushed.

The Sign Of Four tells of the puzzling predicament of Mary Morstan, whose father disappeared ten years ago. Every year, she receives a valuable pearl from an anonymous benefactor. As she sets out to find the source of these beautiful but mysterious gifts, a sudden murder adds to the complexity of the case and Sherlock Holmes finds himself again the perfect man to get to the bottom of it.

The Blue Carbuncle

The final story of the series is probably the most enjoyable remains very close to Conan Doyle's original. There is some nice interplay between Cushing and Stock and the story captures the sense of period very well despite the obvious hectic schedule and shoddy production values.

The Blue Carbuncle, a valuable jewel, is stolen from Lady Morcar, and an innocent workman is charged and remanded in the run-up to Christmas. Holmes gets a visitor, a gentleman, who belongs to a Christmas Club putting money by to purchase a goose for his Christmas dinner. Someone has tried to steal his goose. Another member of the club finds the carbuncle in the goose he has bought. Who put it there? Holmes must find out if one family is to avoid a miserable Yuletide.

The Hound of the Baskervilles

Classic two-part story starring Peter Cushing and Nigel Stock as the inquisitive pair, dealing first-hand with an horrific bestial menace. The story is presented in its original 2 episode format and manages to remain relatively faithful to the novel given the expanded running time. The main fault with the story is that Holmes is missing for much of the time and it falls upon Nigel Stock to carry the first episode alone. With a good deal of location footage shot on Dartmoor itself the production probably looks the best of the lot. Cushing is on good form and Nigel Stock makes a very good Watson showing that the Granada "get Watson right" ethic had been tried successfully, already. This version is much more in line with the novel than the excellent but tailored to theatrical Hammer version. For example, this Hound uses a young Dr Mortimer and has the novel version of Beryl Stapelton's relationship with her "brother" as well as Laura Lyons. Of course more fidelity to the novel means less of Mr Cushing onscreen.

Dr Mortimer, who has a general practice on Dartmoor, consults Holmes. His friend Sir Charles Baskerville has recently died, supposedly of a heart attack but Dr Mortimer links the death to the myth of the hound of the Baskervilles, which, centuries earlier, killed wicked Hugo Baskerville and is said to haunt each generation. Sir Charles' young heir and nephew Henry is returning from abroad and the doctor fears for his safety. Sir Henry has a boot stolen from his hotel room and is followed by a bearded man. Holmes sends Dr Watson off to Dartmoor with Mortimer and Henry, where he meets the butterfly collector and his sister Beryl, plus the very nervous housekeeper and valet to the Baskervilles, Mr. and Mrs. Barrymore, who appear to be signalling to someone on the moor... Sir Henry is apparently attacked and killed by the hound but the victim is actually an escaped convict, Seldon, Mrs Barrymore's brother, to whom she had given old clothes of Henry's and the dog, recognizing the scent from the boot stolen in London, had gone for him. Watson meets a disguised Holmes, living rough on the moors in order to survey the likely suspects. He believes he has seen the man who controls the hound and sets a trap for him with Sir Henry as its bait.

The Sign of Four

Another full length story which was compressed down to 50 minutes but this time doesn't work as well which is a shame is it is a great story. The Jeremy Brett adaptation remains the superior version but it is nice to see Cushing in some classic scenes although the entire second half is rushed.

The Sign Of Four tells of the puzzling predicament of Mary Morstan, whose father disappeared ten years ago. Every year, she receives a valuable pearl from an anonymous benefactor. As she sets out to find the source of these beautiful but mysterious gifts, a sudden murder adds to the complexity of the case and Sherlock Holmes finds himself again the perfect man to get to the bottom of it.

The Blue Carbuncle

The final story of the series is probably the most enjoyable remains very close to Conan Doyle's original. There is some nice interplay between Cushing and Stock and the story captures the sense of period very well despite the obvious hectic schedule and shoddy production values.

The Blue Carbuncle, a valuable jewel, is stolen from Lady Morcar, and an innocent workman is charged and remanded in the run-up to Christmas. Holmes gets a visitor, a gentleman, who belongs to a Christmas Club putting money by to purchase a goose for his Christmas dinner. Someone has tried to steal his goose. Another member of the club finds the carbuncle in the goose he has bought. Who put it there? Holmes must find out if one family is to avoid a miserable Yuletide.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984 - 1994)


The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is the name given to the TV series of Sherlock Holmes adaptations produced by British television company Granada Television between 1984 and 1994, although only the first two series bore that title on screen. The series was broadcast on the ITV network in the UK, and starred Jeremy Brett as the famous detective. The portrayal remains very popular. In addition, Holmes's faithful friend and companion Dr. Watson is scrupulously portrayed as the kind of thoroughly competent sidekick Holmes would want. Watson was portrayed by David Burke in the two Adventures series before he elected to leave so as to spend more time with his wife and young son. He was replaced by Edward Hardwicke, who played Watson for the remainder of the run.

Forty-one of the 60 Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle were adapted in the series, spanning 36 one-hour episodes and five feature-length specials.[/quote]
