First off, what is this modem ? a Dial up modem or an ADSL modem ? next, are you sure that this modem is not supported by Ubuntu ?

Install Prolink 1456PVC Modem Driver on Ubuntu 7.04

1. Install hsfmodem_7.60.00.09full_i386.deb from terminal
* type sudo dpkg -i *.deb
* Where is the linux source build directory that matches your running kernel?
* [/lib/modules/2.6.20-15-generic/build] press Enter

2. Open new terminal, type ./genertor.pl [email address] [Registration ID]
3. get key: XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
4. enter the key on Please enter license key [FREE] :
5. Copy hsfpatch to /usr/lib/hsfmodem :
* $ sudo cp hsfpatch /usr/lib/hsfmodem/
6. Execute patch file : $ sudo ./hsfpatch
* file 'modules/imported/hsfengine-i386.O' openend
* patching... done
7. Reconfigere hsfmodem : type sudo hsfconfig
* Press ENTER for all the questions
* Would you like to keep using them? [no]
