if you still not using some opensource softwears it is the best time to use...
do not hesitate. just start using one of them.
if you want to be a pragramer you must use some these o/s.
coz it's the best way to lern a codes of a o/s. every code can be viwed,(not like windows).......

you don't have to get a super computer for these things...
if you have 64 mb vga and somthing around 384 mb ram you can run these visual efects withou any problem..
you can find so many amazing videos about this in youtube..watch those and decide(serch for "beryl" or "compiz" or "xgl" in youtube serch bar)
