The U.N.'s top human rights official says she expects a hotly contested report on alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka to be referred to the global body's Human Rights Council within hours.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay told The Associated Press on Monday that U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon would likely transmit the report "today."

The report found evidence of possible war crimes by both Sri Lankan troops and Tamil Tiger rebels during the final weeks of the civil war in 2009.

Ban Ki-moon said in April that he would welcome a mandate from the Human Rights Council to launch an international probe into the allegations.

Sri Lanka's government rejects the report's findings and says it opposes an outside investigation.
