Valentino Rossi recorded his 100th Grand Prix victory in Holland today (27/06/2009).

Valentino Rossi won his 100th Grand Prix, took his second triumph in succession and became the undisputed leader of the MotoGP World Championship with a stellar performance at the Alice TT Assen. The Fiat Yamaha rider had a peerless performance from pole position and, unlike two weeks previous in Barcelona, needed no ‘Hail Mary’ last lap at the Cathedral of Motorcycle Racing.

A vintage Rossi performance was celebrated with his unraveling a backdrop and posing for a classic photo with antiquated cameras, the Italian’s latest post-race show with his faithful fan club.

Valentino Rossi, (born February 16, 1979 in Urbino,Italy) is an Italian professional motorcycle racer and multiple MotoGP World Champion. He is one of the most successful motorcycle racers of all time. Following his father, Graziano Rossi, Rossi started racing in Grand Prix in 1996 for Aprilia in the 125cc category and won his first World Championship the following year. From there, he moved up to the 250cc category with Aprilia and won the World Championship in 1999. He won the 500cc World Championship with Honda in 2001, the MotoGP World Championships (also with Honda) in 2002 and 2003, and continued his streak of back-to-back championships by winning the 2004 and 2005 titles after leaving Honda to join Yamaha, before regaining the title in 2008.

Though Rossi won the MotoGP title six times he never put the number 1 on his motorcycle representing the World Champion, instead staying with his famous "46". But Rossi has worn the #1 reserved for the reigning World Champion on the shoulder of his racing leathers.

Reigning champion Valentino Rossi claimed his 100th grand prix triumph in the FIM MotoGP World Championship.

He created history with another dominant display in round seven of the FIM MotoGP World Championship in Assen on Saturday.

The 30-year-old, who started on pole, finished 5.368 seconds ahead of Spanish team-mate Jorge Lorenzo as the pair completed a Yamaha one-two for the second consecutive race.

Ducati rider Casey Stoner of Australia made up the podium, almost 18 seconds behind Lorenzo.

Rossi's triumph earned him sole leadership in the overall standings, having headed to Holland level on 106 points with Lorenzo and Stoner.

The Italian moved onto 131 points, five clear of Lorenzo and nine ahead of Stoner.

It also saw him become only the second man to reach a hundred grand prix victories, with only 15-time world champion Giacomo Agostini (122) having enjoyed more.

Spain's Dani Pedrosa led the way briefly early on in Assen from second on the grid before Rossi regained the upper hand, with Stoner then also enjoying a short stint at the front before Rossi took command of proceedings for good.

Pedrosa crashed out after four laps, with his Honda colleague Andrea Dovizioso of Italy forced out in similar circumstances six laps later.

The Tech 3 Yamaha of American Colin Edwards went on to take fourth, almost half a minute behind Rossi.

Australian Chris Vermeulen (Suzuki) posted his best result of the year with fifth, while Great Britain's James Toseland (Tech 3 Yamaha) capitalised on a last-lap crash for Finn Mika Kallio (Pramac Ducati) to finish sixth
