Government to censor war news
(LeN-Aug 15, 7.20 pm) The government is to impose a censorship on news items related to war.
A competent authority will be appointed to impose a censorship under the emergency regulations now in force and to invoke several laws in this connection. According to reports senior administrative officer Asoka Pieris is tipped to be the competent authority.
He once served as the Media Secretary of former President Chandrika Kumaraunga and also functioned as Director General of the National Television for a brief period during her administration.
The President will hold a meeting on the censorship tomorrow morning with the heads of print electronic media institutions. The President has invited all heads of media institutions to be present at Temple Trees at 9.00 tomorrow morning
