Minister Wimal Weerawansa told parliament
today (5) that not allowing General Sarath
Fonseka to attend parliament sessions is a
violation of his privileges and would therefore be
a bad precursor.
Weerawansa made this statement when DNA
parliamentary group leader Anura Kumara
Dissanayake raised a privileges issue in parliament
saying that General Fonseka has been prevented
from attending parliament sessions.
Weerawansa said that regardless of the political
views harbored by General Fonseka, he is a
people ’s representative in parliament and should
therefore be allowed to attend parliament
sessions.
The Speaker informed parliament that the General
has been prevented from attending
parliament because his lawyers have failed to
inform the members of the court martial that he
had to attend parliamentary sessions today. He
said that he would respond after consulting the
Attorney General.
Meanwhile, Dissanayake informed parliament that
General Fonseka has commenced a fast against
the decision not to allow him to attend
parliamentary sessions today.
