VirtualBox

Yesterday I saw the 64bit version of VirtualBox for Windows and installed it. Even though it is 64bit, at present it only supports 32bit guests. 64bit means, it is compiled in 64bit to run on a 64bit OS....in my case, Vista x64. (same applies to MS Virtual PC - it doesn't support 64bit guests and it doesn't even have native 64bit code; only the drivers are 64bit)

A few seconds ago I installed WinXP with 256MB RAM and it's unbelievably fast. I haven't played much with it yet, but it installed XP in about 10 minutes...that's pretty fast for me.

Currently I'm running XP with all the visuals turned on. It wasn't easy to do that on MS VirtualPC or even VMWare...

One worry is that I haven't yet been able to install Vista in it. I could install, but it doesn't boot. Gives me an error...If I can get it to work, I can dump VirtualPC for good.

I've not tried virtualbox, but I've seen articles which states it's possible to run vista from virtualbox, atleast with virtualbox runing on a linux host. (not sure it's 32 or 64 bit)

on Xen you can install vista (but that's again linux)
BTW why are you trying to install vista on vista
If I can get vista installed, it will work fine I suppose. I just can't install it... :(

Vista on Vista is for testing new apps (and viruses lol)

The error might be due to you running AMD64 version of virtual box on an intel machine. IMO If they had a proper intel 64 bit virtualbox version you would be able to get vista on vista working.

I have a damning idea that you can install some linux system (prefer debian) on your vista host and then install virtual box on that virtual system, then on that virtual host install vista.
    vista ---virtualbox--->debian ----virtualbox--->vista.
You could try that way, it might work.

I'm going to try virtualbox myself, I'll install it in a debian system and then try to run vista as a guest. First I'll have to find a vista dvd/cd :)

    Anusha,
Would you please be bale to give some benchmarks... What are you running on what? Virtualizing XP on Vista?
It would be great if you can give like SuperPi or 3Dmark scores for this... also any issues with it..? like network or sounds?
    Thanks bro.

You can't run 3dmark etc. on it. It only emulates a 8MB VGA :D

    I'll try SuperPI

What I mean by high performance is the responsiveness of the guest OS. It just feels like running XP natively...And it only takes 3 seconds to resume XP from saved state.

    Here's the SuperPI Benchmark....

    VirtualBox_XP_SuperPI.jpg

It seems only one Core is allocated for the guest OS, just like MS Virtual PC. VMWare Workstation on the other hand allows multiple cores to be assigned for guest OS. But it's slow as hell...takes a long time to load too...

i pressed but noting happened ne :P its still in the virtual box :P i have to use cltr+alt+del to get the mouse back to windows desk :P
Install the Virtual Machine Tools. It's much faster and you you can interact with the guest OS as if it is just another program on the host OS.
