A man standing behind me arches over and whispers in my ear.....
You know their not shooting rabbits don't you lad.......
Fear had gripped me in a stunned silence, so couldn't summon a response or even turn to face him. I just bolted with my eyes in a fixed trance forward
Though even in this prose I was deafened by the screams of men rolling in agony in the aftermath of having their knee caps blown off. The faster I tried to escape the more it seemed I was in slow motion. Time stood still and in the corner of my eye could see the puddles in the cobbled alley filling up with the men's ever squirting blood
Belfast was like this for a good thirty years with barbaric senseless violence that targeted all. Abhorrent acts by all that were amoral in the extreme.
A high profile conflict because it involved a Western super power in the United Kingdom. Though for much of the time this feud filled the print of all the Worlds Presses, an equally bloody one in Sri Lanka had collective blind eyes turned from it.
Strange now that those eyes are opening wide and a showman of a cricketer in Sanath Jayasuriya is going to be used as the powder in the cannons aimed squarely at Sri Lanka.
More precisely the Jayasuriya's current employers the Sri Lankan Government with his graduation into politics in his post retirement.
A controversy centring around the actions of this government in the bloody conclusion to the 26 year long Civil War in 2009. Actions in many quarters that have been labelled as War Crimes against Tamil Civilians in safe zones.
It must be said unsubstantiated claims at this point and then sullied further by other party in the feud, the LTTE, whose history has been littered by acts of Terrorism and real barbarism. Even against it's own people.
LTTE Bruetle Attackes and assasinations at non war zone. Sri Lankan Troops Assist over 150,000 trapped civiliance. LTTE used child soldiers as suicide bomers. SL troops carried Tamil childrens to care. ©
So the murkiness of this claim of an estimated 40000 civilian lives slain is it could have been perpetrated by either party
Sadly though it has lead to swift condemnation coming from the United Kingdom over the inclusion of Sanath Jayasuriya as a means of a farewell in the first two One Day Internationals. This because of his place in what is now labelled a despotic regime without it being proven. Then claims of nepotism in favour of Jayasuriya
This unfortunate to a legend like Sanath because at the time of the allegations he wasn't even part of the Government. Then reaction since about his inclusion in the Team has been scathing with him being made culpable through guilt by association in a crime that hasn't yet been proven
Jayasuriya's selection is a disgrace and the idea of playing cricket against a team that includes him is a disgrace.-Andy Bull (Daily Telegraph)
Words that have put a real political charge in the initial Odis, which is logical by the scale of this tragedy, but regrettable by the victims it is claiming now
First and foremost the victim of Jayasuriya's legacy. In regards to why can't he be allowed a farewell game in a what is essentially a meaningless Odi series?
On a grander scale the Sri Lankan people, who for near on 20 years were delighted by Jayasuriya's grandeur. Why not allow then a chance to bask in him one more time?
Then why try to literally put salt into their gaping wounds over this and other atrocities by politicizing the game that brings so much joy to them. In calls of having bans on the Sri Lankan Team and boycotts
Just allows a terrible tragedy that should have the perpetrators paraded in front of the Hague and punished duly.
Have their legacy of evil infect a game that allowed so many smiles in terrible times for all Sri Lankan's.
