Water rumors afloat in Kandy

Four children from Wakarawatte near Lake Round in Kandy were admitted to the Kandy Teaching Hospital after drinking water from a tank. Mischief makers have been quick to spread rumors that the water supply has been poisoned in Kandy.

Investigations have revealed that the children had drunk tainted water from a tank which had not been cleaned for a long time. Authorities appeal to the public not to be misled.

Water poisoning story a canard, says NWSDB

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) says that there is no truth whatsoever in the story spread last night (Sept. 29) that the drinking water supply had been poisoned in the Kandy and Matale districts.

NWSDB Central Province Deputy General Manager Lakshman Attanayake confirms that water samples were tested to confirm this. The areas supplied include Harispattuwa, Tennekumbura, Ampitiya, Pujapitiya, Akurana, Udunuwara, Yatinuwara, Gampola, Matale, Dambulla, Naula areas.

Those still in doubt can get their drinking water samples checked in the laboratory at Sarasavi Uyana. This service will be provided free of charge today only, says the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB). Those who bring samples should prove their identities, it added.
