A new program might not be able to use that RAM, because RAM is allocated "together"; say you have 10, 100MB holes = 1GB free RAM. But if a program needs 120MB to be allocated, it cannot be loaded!!! This is where pagefile comes into play. The OSes page out unused programs/data to pagefile, but when they page them back into RAM, they allocate them efficiently so those holes are minimized.This is why my Windows RAM usage is around 1.8GB without pagefile, and 1.3GB with pagefile.</blockquote>
