There is lots of ppl still use 32bit in sl.

Did I ask them to use 32bit? Did I ask anyone to buy a 64bit processor and a 64bit OS?

There are a lot of Sri Lankan people who have 64bit CPUs (maybe they don't know that they have, maybe they don't know what is it, maybe they don't care what it is, maybe they are pure stupid, maybe they want to move into 64bit but they can't because something they want doesn't work in it) and still running XP 32bit.

I have a 64bit processor and I'm taking full use of it's capabilities. If you don't, it's not my problem.

Clearly the 64bit version of 7zip outperforms everything else. Then why use the 32bit version of it, anything 32bit for that matter?

Besides, you are the n00b who compresses files and burn to CDs/DVDs. One read error, and bye bye everything

Wow thanks guys. really interesting thread.

I use RAR and UHARC, well i'm not much in to compressing files. :D ;)

though i ones had a AVI file (167MB) compressed to 4.7MB. wonder what kind of algorithms do that kind of magic to a video file.

Any way as u guys know what the best compressing tool commercially available today. ???

    I agree.

When someone goes to buy a new comp, they will buy the biggest option which is possible for their budget. We like to have the coolest, cutting edge gadgets in our hand as soon as we can. Even we can't buy we drool at the mention of ASUS Lamborghinis, iPhones, 80core processors and even Plasma TVs.
When you go to buy a cool new gfx card, you will also buy the latest game in town to test. Everybody who buy these type of top end hardware test them to the limit. When you see your hardware performing at extremes, the thrill is endless. I totally agree anyone who doesn't "use to the limit" the hardware they buy are idiots.

I tend to be conservative about the resources the system will use, that's because the lesser resources a program use, I can accommodate other programs to run together. Doing several tasks together (lol multitasking) increases the amount of work I can get done in a given time. This is the same reason multicore processors are out there, do more in a given time. If proper 64bit optimized versions are available for programs I use, I'll definitely use them.

I used the 64bit 7zip version. Sadly the only 32bit computer I have is a P3 which runs entirely on linux.
I'll agree that being optimized gives 7zip the edge, but the other programs winzip and winrar were also run on the same computer. I can't take blame for the inability of winzip or winrar to produce a 64bit optimized version.

A curious trait in Sri Lankan people are that they are tech hungry, that is they will buy the latest hardware soon as they can regardless of the money they have in hand. I'll bet most people who use computers (ordinary desktop users, not businesses) have switched to mulitcore processors.

Do you work in a press office
Did they tell you to compress everything you backup. AFAIK businesses doesn't burn CDs with compressed archives if they feel they will want them at a time. ie: audit records.

    I think it's WinRK
    http://www.msoftware.co.nz/WinRK_about.php
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinRK

    From Wikipedia:
Reviews done by maximumcompression.com show WinRK delivers the highest compression-ratios of programs in its class.

See, there are so many crappy Toyota cars in Sri Lanka and comparatively very small amount of BMWs. It doesn't mean the Toyota's are better....:P

If WinRAR will ever move to a native x64 design, I will move back. Till then, no no...

From where are those data taken ? ! ! Not from Wikipedia as I see.
Where ever you got that data set, 7z is excluded. That doesn't make a complete test, you are just trying to glorify winrar.

At least you read a page from wikipedia. Do that once a day. It will increase your IQ and logical reasoning power. :P
