I've been out of touch. But in terms of brands, Pioneer, Plextor, NEC, Liteon & Benq are on top. Most of the other "well known" brands such as Asus, Samsung, Sony are either rebranded products of those brands I stated before, or some other brand such as Toshiba etc..
Eg: Asus = Pioneer.

What abt LG. i surf some forums. in their i saw LG has some demand too. but nothing abt "Our Brands" like Asus, samsung, sony.

Anusha, is there a dealer in here to buy pioneer writers or Plextor? i think NEC, benq and Liteon we can find in here.

Also what do u mean by rebranded products? can u explain it a bit?

i use a sony DRU 810a for nearly 4 years now... no problems what so ever
Exactly! It is one of a kind!!! I have flashed mine (DRU-810) to Benq DW1640 :)

Not that feature rich as the latest models, but the burn quality and read performance impeccable.

Samsung is good
"Good" is not a good term because there is hardly any price difference between the burners from different brands (i.e. price premium). So, we should aim for the best. And Toshiba (Samsung) is not something people like much.

Sony DRU-810A is a rebadged Benq DW1640. Benq is the OEM. Same hardware. Different firmware. Benq makes their own and Sony makes their own. By flashing Benq firmware on the Sony, it becomes a Benq drive. Benq has a cool software that let u tweak ur burner. It is not supported by the Sony firmware.

"Cross flashing" is not that straight forward. U have to search through the forums to find out how to do it, if it is possible at all. U might not want to do it at all. But I'm adventurous :P

Do not flash if you have a fairly mature drive. All the drives come with the latest firmware available at that time. If it is a very new model (month or two old), you will have to flash because there could be many resolved bugs and quality improvements.
