I'm not confused at all.
Most of phone companies in USA provide FREE phones or sometime charge $1 - $50. We have any type of phones in here. We don't think about unlocking at all. If we have old phone, we can trade with new phone, when new ones came.
May be u did not hear about Consumer Electronice Show (CES - http://www.cesweb.org/default.asp ) It is the only show that producers introduce their new gadgets or products to the world. It happens every year in here Las Vegas.
If you want to see any new electronic product for the first time. You must need to come to Las Vegas.
Another thing is most products are cheaper here compare to europe.

most ppl unlock their phones to use with different networks. example if they are not happy with Cingular service they switch the network to T-mobile. they just simply throw the cingular sim card and put a t-mobile sim in their phone. but to do this you need to remove the sim restriction which is originaly put on the phone by cingular. thers no any law regarding locking and unlocking mobile phones.

Today most of the computer stuff, are 1st seen in the east.... in countries like Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, China before its even hit the US shores!!

As I know, most of companies are trying to get more business via CES. I have been invited for most of electronic and computer realted convenions and trade shows. I have some experiences in the marketing sector of these companies too.
Steve Jobs decided to introduce new laptop at MacWorld in San Francisco inteed of CES in this year.
You can find most of latest products and technology from CES website. I think they are planning to move CES to another city from Las Vegas or move to another city by city.
as i know software developing is the highest paid job in computer field. This is the overall scenario. But there are some odd situations others categories paid well. But when you think about SL market engineers can demand at anytime. Not like SQE, networking and DBA's. It's really hard to find someone to carry out the work some other developer has done. It takes time. So the companies try to keep there existing developers. But believe me developing is not an easy job. If you are a hard core developer you will see source codes in you dreams
