Dude! why not ?
This movie came out of nowhere. Its a good movie. So much character driven.Director Fred Zinnemann also has some good movies .From Here to Eternity,A Man for All Seasons,The Day of the Jackal.
But it has something ,some greatness underneath.Supported it by some of crtics over the years but not most of them.
But i feel director did not deliberately do the the greatness which, those bunch of critics are stating.Movie made that thing itself.

dude, no director goes to do a movie saying "I'm going to do greatness" or "I'm not going to do greatness, only mediocre" or "I'm going to do bad".
When all the right elements kick in, the movie becomes great.
In this case, the movie captures human nature damn well in this movie on how people change and forget/dont care about the past.
Thats why this movie is so great.

I dont say this is a medicore movie by no means.and Its so good. But AFI has chosen 100 movies- 100 years 100 best (2007 Edit).major part of it are old movies.
But my point is there are modern movies -masterpieces which are not included.
where is lord of the rings?where is American Beauty? Mulholand dr?Thin Red Line
King Kong 1933. is better than king kong by Peter Jackson?I think they have picked that for historical milestones ..
But there good r new movies should be included in AFI's 100 list 2007 edit.

um have yo seen the new king kong ? I couldnt watch even 30 mins of it. LOTR trilogy is a faithful adaptation of the book. Only the fans of the book will appreciate that but LOTR does not deserve to be on greatest movies list. There's nothing innovative in technology used nor does t have stellar story.
Wont comment on American beauty as I havent seen it (And I'm not going to any time soon either). I'm partial to Mulholand Drive. Didnt like it at all.

As for films not being on AFI's top 100 list, first look at the selection criteria:
    wikipedia said:
    AFI 100 Years… series
The popular AFI 100 Years… series, which ran from 1998 to 2008, and created jury-selected lists of America’s best movies in categories including Musicals, Laughs and Thrills, drove new generations to experience classic American films. The juries consisted of over 1,500 artists, scholars, critics and historians, with movies selected based on the film’s popularity over time, historical significance and cultural impact.
Even though some of the movies you mentioned are good, they fall short of the selection criteria.

    Edit :
The AFI 2007 list is the 10th anniversary of the original 1998 list. So there wont be much new entries in that.

guess you have to consider the fact that high noon has been very influential to other movies that came after it. i haven't seen the movie but most early movies play a big role in cinema for this reason :) whats so great about citizen kane?

and just cos mulholland dr is kinda different doesn't mean it belongs in the top lists its like somebodys nightmare if you are talking about surrealism i think movies like persona did everything better than in mulholland dr.

we can't say anything about new movies yet but there are some movies, movies like pulp fiction or american beauty that will still be great in another 50 years but don't think movies like lotr or mulholland dr will make it that far. giving credit for movies ahead of their time is sheer assumptions.

besides mulholland dr and thin red line are kinda cult movies they don't please the majority of fans or critics. we are just partial to those movies:)

agreed. But If u consider movies of 1997-2008 period If LOR is not there .then what else can be there. ?
There Will Be Blood,Hurt Locker,No Country for Old Men? can be included but LOR is best of above.critically and commercially.
but my point is too many old movies are included in AFIs 100.
    Citizen Kane?
i suggest u to c it for the second time.its a superb movie.

first of all lotr was sooo boring and i really thought it was a load of crap  seriously have a wizard get some deformed ppl and black magic with lots of effects and funny names you'll have something better than that

second of all, you don't have to believe in lists or follow them...critics are human too they can be partial to some movies as well. lets take the imdb top 250 ..do you really think shawshank redemption is the best movie ever made? i don't think so it's their because it's very popular ..every one that sees it loves it. that's actually a doorway to good movies even ppl who love crappy action filled movies will love this one cos it is so accessible..like that some movies bend minds of many critics.

after some point, the greatness is only a matter of opinion. they all are evenly great but some might appeal to you in a higher level. :) many ppl but you might find high noons place on that list well deserved.
