Anyway I'm kind of excited, but isn't Superman suppose to be light and upbeat, not like dark and gritty like this trailer shows, trailer's indie-ish feeling and LotR music isn't helping it either.

The disasters that were Superman 2 up to 5 (or 6 ?) fucked up Superman movies. The comic covers all aspects, from outright crazy to dark.
If you want a good Superman movie, watch Superman : Doomsday.
According to the wiki, Man of Steel is likely to be based on the All Star Superman series, which as far as stories go, is a good series.
