There was no Tamilnadu, India, Srilanka 2000 years ago. People didn't want to identify themselves with nationality and nationalism, patriotism were rich kings tool to motivate innocents for their political benefits. Only the worrisome trend has been carried till date nothing else. This question and answers to it are well within the trend.
The present day Tamilnadu, India and Srilanka were almost connected by land with few shallow sea beds between the land mass. I believe you don't have issues with this scientific fact. Below is the topographical view of the depth and cross-sectional presentation. 15m is the highest depth of sea between India and srilanka. At most places it is lesser than 7 meters.
Plate tectonics scientists be it Tamilan, Sinhalese or a British see Tamilnadu and Srilanka as a single continuous land mass of varying depth.
Secondly, the recent Keezhadi excavation in Madurai, TN has proved the speakers of the language Tamil are urbanized and were living an Uber life 3BCE. I believe you don't have issues with carbon dating to find out antiquity of archeology.

Geographically present day north east and north west coast of srilanka is less than 100 miles from Keezhadi, where trades from west and east several 1000 miles away were discovered in Keezhadi. I believe the geographic distances are acceptable and measurable for anyone sinhalese and tamilians do not have a problem with distance. It has been well established with linguistic science and Sinhala folks themselves don't mind accepting that they were not natives but came from somewhere near present day ODHISA and Bengal. Ask a srilankan the origin of sinhala language,it's part of the Indo Aryan language family close to pali language which was the defacto language in Kalinga.
Given all these available scientific evidence at hand (at the moment) any unbiased be it srilankan, British or any one would conclude people of southern India could have come much earlier than sinhalese to the island. The southern India may not mean present day tamils. The presence of south Indians (lived 2000 years ago) in present day Srilanka is natural flow and they never needed to land in present day srilanka. It's a natural extension for South Indians to move into srilanka. In the race between who came first between present day Sinhala speaking folks and Tamil speaking folks is a political contest. The Tamil speaking southern Indian folks presence in the island definitely predates the Sinhala speaker.
Finally,
Sinhala speakers who came by sea route not by land routes. There is no record of land invasions. Hence the number of people transported through sea are fractional compared to the people who existed in the island (native aboriginals and South Indian).
Sea faring even today is not a cup of tea for Woman, no offense here women are equal to men but the preference to be a sea farer is less amongst women.
In Olden days with uncertainty, less reliable ships it is a reasonable conclusion that the fraction of people from East India who landed in the island are mostly Men. They married most of the locals both natives and especially with Tamils as east India was as flourishing as Southern India.
Fast forward 2000 years the British east India or Dutch or French were men for nearly 100 years. Imagine who may have traveled in 300 bce. The British married a lot of locals and we have Anglo Indian communities. This is human nature there is no pure breed.
Hence if you are in the island and claim to be proud Sinhala, just remember that your mother side chromosomes were never a Sinhala speakers, your mother tongue was a South Indian language close to present day Tamil not sinhalese.
Same yard stick applies to Proud Tamils as well, Sinhala speakers may well be your dad or uncle who married your sister.
There has been instances of alliances of Sinhala and Tamil kings to over throw another powerful Tamil King. So don't consider today's political scenario shape your beliefs on history geography. According to Tamil literature, For most of the history tamils and sinhalese were friendly kingdoms. In fact all Tamil speakers never belonged to one country the same applies to sinhalese as well. During those times the Tamil and sinhalese kingdoms joined hands to push other sinhala or Tamil kings. The blind hatred for one another will surely make this place hell. Think you belive who came first will solve the problem and give upper hand to one of the parties. The problem of ego is never settled logically but emotionally.

As per this there is no visible kumari kandam or Ram sethu. Science gave bulbto both theories.
