Wht is the perfect size for a website header

I'm Designing a Simple Site by using ONLY HTML and Gimp (for Imgs)

since today i used CMSs but I found dat wan't gv me what i need. so i started hand coding

I got Few Problems

major one

Wht is the perfect size for a Site header? (height nad weight) , I'm planning to Add a IMG Banner as the Header (i mean nonanimated image) wht is the perfect size? (for every kinda monitor. couz the last site i made using my 15' moni is a FREAK @ 17'

is dat OK to add a banner image as the header and place the navigation bar right below.

or should i add only cuple of pics with text? . wht will be more Speed and eye friendly?

i need da ideas of experienced guys

many ppl have monitors with 1024x768 or 800x600 size screen. so i think that width of the header-logo must be smaller than 800 pixel (around 600-700px) and height should be around 100-200px. (just a idea)

i don't have idea abt other things. mostly they are depend on what kinda website u gonna make & what u want.

Hmm.. Height is too Much, Its better to have it less than 800px

Like - 780 x 120 px
