Sri Lanka does not have very many independent journalists and we must protect the few that we have. And the State has a responsibility to ensure that.

This is not on. The way this is going no person is free to express his own views. Where are we heading ? media freedom is myth in Sri Lanka.

Posted By: Devapriya

I am not with any political party... there can be another side of a story... thinking unbiased can this be an instance where this was done to assign more pressure on the gov. Seriously this is another way to divert attention. Hope he will be fine.

"Conspiracy to discredit the Government and to sling mud on the great victory gained by heroic and brave security forces." Posted By: sudath. This is conspiracy by Government against the Media. The conspiracy to discredit the Government is nothing but a myth. This is one those person who believe whatever the government say.

Posted By: Raj

Now it seems too much.... Day before yesterday it is Sirasa and today Lasantha.... No matter what their vision is.... Media should have the freedom to report.... If the facts are wrong, why these ppl are bothered??? Ppl will reject them.... But the truth is that, ppl knows that there is some truth out there.... Do anyone think that all media should be a sh** like state media??? Now do all journalists should have to follow Mahinda Abeysundara or Sudharman to save their lives???? Now wht is our government going to do? They will accuse UNP for this too.... This is so silly.... Ppl have to open their eyes and see.... UNP has done wrong to media when they are in power, YES.... But, when they are not in power????
Posted By: NG

A Road Map to Rule by the Gun! One fearless man who was 'forthright' in his views has been taught a lesson by the gun! Mr. Ambassador of America, you only said the other day "the media is under threat". Hardly we passed the reading, another fearless journalist has paid the supreme sacrifice!

I do not agree with the people who suspect GOSL. We know that it is very easy to say for anything that Gvt is rsponsible. Guys could you please analyze the present political and military environment. Do not put all debts in to the Gvnmnt account as there are many motivated parties want this moment to be used against government and distabilised the current political and military trend as their last resort.

Every body is criticizing the government. But I feel it can be some other party doing all these to destroy the image of the government which they gained by defeating LTTE. Govt is already blamed for the sirasa attack and in such case govt will never do another similar thing. So it can be LTTE, opposition or some other party who wants to see the govt is in trouble.

Now all the foolish people are blame to Government and that what exactly behind this activity. Please understand that if Government wants to Kill Lasantha Wickramatunga they will definitely not doing that on this stage. There is no media in SL that can be called ‘free media’. Either its Govt media, anti govt media (such as leader & mtv) & others are somewhat balanced like SW, Derana & even TNL. This is a direct result of what UNP did to innocent journalists like Richard Zoysa & went unpunished, sadly history is repeated once agaion.

I pray that Mr Wickramatunga recovers from his injuries, and my thoughts go out to his family, and also to the staff of the Leader newspaper. I am ashamed this is happening in my country. It is a situation that has to be nipped in the bud, now. We may disagree with what some one may say or believe in but, both, as a democracy and predominantly Buddhist country we should firmly reject violence in any form as a reaction. Let the lawmakers and the law deal with what is right and what is wrong. The security forces of the country have risen to new strengths in our war against terror and have justifiably gained a high standing in the eyes of the country, and indeed, of the world. In conjunction with its victories in the war it is of paramount importance that they support and safeguard the democratic and Buddhist values of the country. They must ensure that we do not slide in the direction of the situation that prevails in Pakistan where shadow forces instigated by the establishment execute a campaign of violence against those they see as obstacles to their interests.

The LTTE is in a desperate situation and they are loosing like nothing. As government knows that the people suspect the government for such a killing, will they do resort to such foolish thing? Someone now needs to seriously ask if Sri Lanka is not becoming as bad as Chicago in the 1920s. Gangsters who do the bidding of those to get rid of those who are decent and honest people and yet voice protest. The call for a probe into the MTV is hollow rhetoric. What is the bet he will say the same about this horrendous incident. The impact on the country over such incidents could hit the investment. All law abiding citizens should now say enough is enough. The murder of Lasantha Wickramatunga will become another of the many unsolved crimes against the voice of rational opposition while the counterrevolutionaries in power smile and slap each others back at silencing another fine man.

This reminds me of a time we all try to forget the 88/89 era. Let us stand in defiance to our right to exist. It is the responsibility of the state to create a safe environment for its people. A state that is incapable of that should not be entrusted with such responsibility.

But as typical Sri Lankans we always forget whatever happens as the days pass no matter how grave the incident was !!!

We have lost a brave journalist who faced many a threat and with his demise we are going to miss quite a lot of investigative journalism, specially the corruptions committed by the ones in authority. I am certain the culprits will not be apprehended because this heinous crime definitely would have had the blessings of the people in authority. Today the state electronic media will try to cover up by saying that this act had been done by those who want to discredit the Government. The masses are apparently being reckoned as asses by dishing out news of this sort. We caution our journalists who are critical of the people in authority to take extra precaution in their day to day movements.

Death of Democracy in Sri Lanka Late Lasantha bravely reported against corruption risking his life and now paid dearly. We pray that he attain nibbana. The Sri Lankan Government has monopolised the entire public media and selling the war for political gain. Hitler's media minister Goebles was no match for our Sri Lankan greats. What a sad day

What is imposed upon us by the powers that be is a gradual and systematic mental indoctrination whilst the masses in their sheer gullibility prance around their tall tales.A bold few in our midst choose to question the veracity of the utter mendacity they preach. Contempt of Court, unconstitutional appointments to the arms of government, blatant corruption or the fall of Killinochi quite coincidentally before the elections and the literal silencing of all those who choose to question. There is a need to question, lest we too be silenced! The day ‘they’ silence the media…….that is the day when we need to ask ourselves whether we truly are a democracy! In Lasantha Wickramatunga I see a martyr! It’s easy to engulf ourselves with apathy….yet, what happens when they come for us?

To be honest, I read more from this paper than on any other media to get the real picture and the approach is fair. The rest of the media in the south never treat the suffering tamils as humans. DM publish both side news but without much sympathy towards majority of the minority's suffering. SL moving from bad to worse. By end of Chinthana term, there will be nothing left except thugs ruling the country. Who is the real terrorist?

A Worldwide survey was conducted by the UN! The only question asked was: "Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?" The survey was a huge failure, In Africa they didn't know what 'food' meant, In India they didn't know what 'honest' meant, In Europe they didn't know what 'shortage' meant, In China they didn't know what 'opinion' meant, In the Middle East they didn't know what 'solution' meant, In South America they didn't know what 'please' meant, And in the USA they didn't know what 'the rest of the world' meant! Finally & the best, the Sri Lankans said this question is not applicable to us since we are in "paradise".

I think this is the latest LTTE's stratergy to discredit the government.(TO DISCREDIT MEDIA/MEDIA PERSONEL)I don't think its resonable to point the finger to the government for this act. After all there is no reason since the government is in a better stand than LTTE after the recent victories. Sunday leader was very critical on the ruling parties allways. Nevertheless there was no intention by the previous or present government to eliminate him even though he was threaten on numourous occations.

RIP Lasantha. A fearless and brave journalist who exposed many government irregularities and incidents of corruption without fear or favour, regardless of which party was in power. While this government is doing great work in demolishing terrorism in the north, it appears there is a form of terrorism growing in Colombo and the south against free media and others who speak out. Do not undo the good work in the north with petty and vicious politics and killings on the south.

I wrote the following quote from Martin Niemoller as a comment to Daily Mirror when Dutugemunu ran riot at PachaWahini, and it is appropriate again: "First they (Nazis) came for the Jews and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the communists and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for me - and by then there was no one left to speak out for me." This is what is going to happen to the public that continues to applaud the government because of "war" ignoring the irreparable damage they are doing to the country all around. Sad, and it makes me ashamed to be a Sri Lankan!

''We reap what we sow'' It is we, the people including the media, who are responsible for creating these politicians who have ultimately turned out to be monsters engulfing the nation and also a hopeless opposition capable of doing nothing for the common man. The paper, Sunday Leader too sowed only hatred among people, and was clearly partial. (not to mention Sirasa/MTV and government media). Anyhow, silencing of dissent will do no good to our nation. This destruction will go on until we wake up from our honeymoon with dum party politics and reject these prostituting politicians in both sides.

Government wide mouthed spokesmen could announce that it was a mistaken identity of Velupillai Pirabakaran as it happened no sooner the ban imposed on LTTE or may claim that it was an isolated incident which could have been carried out by certain PARTIOTIC criminals. The year 2008 was dedicated for the killings of prominent politicians and year 2009 could be dedicated for silencing the media in reporting the actual.

Not my Business They picked Akanni up one morning Beat him soft like clay And stuffed him down the belly Of a waiting jeep. What business of mine is it, So long they don't take the yam From my savouring mouth? They came one night Booted the whole house awake And dragged Danladi out, Then off to a lengthy absence. What business of mine is it So long they don't take the yam From my savouring mouth? Chinwe went to work one day Only to find her job was gone; No query, no warning, no probe- Just one neat sack for a stainless record. What business of mine is it So long they don't take the yam From my savouring mouth? And then one evening As I sat down to eat my yam A knock on the door froze my hungry hand. The jeep was waiting on my bewildered lawn Waiting, waiting in its usual silence. - Professor Niyi Osundare - (The Nigerian Poet used this poem and others to object to the dictatorship that ruled his Country under General Abacha from 1993 to 1998) I grieve with mother Lanka who lost yet another precious son;i grieve not only the loss of a truly courageous , talented and fearless son of the soil but for our beloved motherland herself. Welcome to the land of state terror, corruption and impunity! It's a shame on the incumbent Government; Barely a week since the so called 'friend of the media' took over the Media the second gruesome carnage takes place in broad day light within a high security zone in the capital city; How does the state explain trained sharp shooters on four identical black coloured powerful mo/bikes on a rampage in the city? How does the state disregard a team of trained mercenaries carrying T56, hand grenades and even claymores on a rampage in a National TV station which should have got the best of protection? Isn't it a pertinent question as to whose sins was Lasantha trying to expose during his last few days of his noble life? Isn't it relevant to ask whether there was attempts to silence him by methods legal and otherwise? Is it of any relevance that the very press of this newspaper was attacked on two previous instances? Can the Government account any responsible steps it has taken to bring the culprits to the book? What is the progress of those investigations? The state cannot shirk it's responsibility in any way for either the attack on Sirasa or the loss of this precious life which is worth a billion times than the corrupt and shameless politicos who would go to any extent to cover up their sins. With so many threats looming large the state or the cannot wash their hands off the pouring blood; particularly as the Commander-in -Chief of the Tri forces it is his onerous responsibility to ensure the safety of the citizens at large, specially those at globally known risk. Iraq, move out, we have clearly outdone you , terror-wise! Is this the sri lankan way of celebration??? causing carnage to people and property in the name of 'humane operations'???; Terrorising the south because the north is supposedly recapped? Do you want us to believe that there is a force even beyond your control? What actions do you propose to take to ensure the safety of the journalists and others precious lives at risk? Are only the lives of those meat balls at Diyawannawa and Colombo 3, precious? When will you liberate us southerners? Are you aware that these deaths too cause sorrow to beloved parents, wives, children, friends and relatives? What action does the state propose to take to ensure non-recurrence? I am bewildered liken my many brethren as to who the real terrorists are??? Mr. Wickramatunga, I salute you great sir, for the courage , determination and unblemished integrity you held , to the very last breath; You did not fear, you did not flutter , you did not flee; you did not bow down to might ,money or mayhem. The sad truth remains that the investigative journalism in Sri Lanka from today onwards will be but a dead letter. No one, yes no one will be able to fill your worthy shoes. You would have been a honoured billionnaire celebrity if only you gave up the motherland or your untouched integrity; but you did not and here you are. I express my deep sorrow and solidarity to the bereaved family and to the saddened Nation. My thoughts and prayers are with you. The loss is indeed ours. May the good man attain Nibbana and may this warrior be reborn to slay the many dragons that will be stalking the motherland. Until then may you rest in peace Honourable Sir. -Asiri Aravinda

Same aliens were responsible for kidnapping and killing of thousands of mainly Tamils during past 3 years in and around Colombo. These are happening in the middle of thousands of checkpoints in this city. There is no assurance for any individual who doesn’t want to lick the boots. When I read some of the comments I wonder whether human can be alive without a brain.

:no:I personally don't think that the Govt is behind this.
If they did it is an utterly idiotic act.
They are too shrewd not to do such things.
If they did they might have depended on people who think like me.

But the antagonism which is built now toward Govt
after Sirasa and Lasantha
is mainly built upon the emotions aroused by
Govt's move against law after the court order to reduce Petrol price.
Now many trust that the Govt as stubborn enough to go against law.
People who trusted the Govt as a strong Father Figure
has lost hope and scared.
:eek:It is very difficult to correct that.

Let's watch how are they going to manage with this dilemma.
:frown:

These comments changed my view about Lasantha and Govt.. so what I thought may not be true..
(I never thought that Lasantha was so popular and admired till I read all these comments)

I search for truth, whether I find it or not...
So I thought there may be other members at least a few who would like information..
