4th Part
Truth cannot be silenced by killing creative, courageous, committed editors like Lasantha Wickramatunga. I salute you for your courage. My thoughts are with your family members. Your death is a great loss to the free media and to the freedom and peace loving people not only in Sri Lanka who want to hear the truth. Sri Lanka was once praised as the taste of paradise. It is really sad to see it becoming “the waste of paradise”. My deepest condolences for your loss go the people of Sri Lanka.!

I am a great fan of the articles in your online publications. But now they have done it to their own kind. So just imagine what we have been facing. I pray that you may rest in peace and in memmories of all.

RIP Lasantha. A fearless and brave journalist who exposed many government irregularities and incidents of corruption without fear or favour, regardless of which party was in power. While this government is doing great work in demolishing terrorism in the north, it appears there is a form of terrorism growing in Colombo and the south against free media and others who speak out. Do not undo the good work in the north with petty and vicious politics and killings on the south.

RIP, brave son of mother Lanka. You were a fearless man who almost single-handedly took on the powers-that-be. Obviously they wanted you silenced. What a shame that in SL there is no room for dissent.

This guy is not a proper Editor. He deserves this. He discloses people’s personal life and call the person if he/she did not give money he will publish the story in his newspsper. He could have been get killed long time ago. Even he disclosed former president Chandrika’s personal life. He betrayed our heroic solders.

Very intelligent person. Great loss for the nation

Atthidiya? a liberated area! Can these gallant soldiers liberate us people in the cleared areas from the tyranny of the gun which is ruling us? This is shame to country, the govt (who blame the UNP and the LTTE - as these groups are in power) the very religious President, his brothers and an insult to the security establishment of the country. A day of much sadness and GREAT SHAME.

Salute thee SIR.... "Never in history has oppression succeeded and IT LEADS TO TERRORISM as thats the ONLY way to be on the offensive and history NEVER has shown success of anarchism, take Saddam, Hitler, Idi amin and the lot...

This truly is sad news. I met Mr. Wickramatunga a couple of times and found him to be a very pleasant man. Whether people agreed with his paper or not is irrelevant and like all people in Sri Lanka he did not deserve this dreadful fate. It is always healthy to have a vibrant media, including opposition papers. I fear this will be a big blow to free media in Sri Lanka. My hat off for journalists in Sri Lanka who are facing a tough job, whatever media organisation they work for. I wish them all safety and security.

Great way to celebrates the war victories of a corrupt set of rulers who live the day by whipping up communal hatred and nationalism to cover up all their thuggery, robbery and mis rule. God save SL. Good bye brave man.

My eyes are getting wet. Firstly, for the loss of a good friend, and secondly, for the near loss of Rule of Law, Freedom of Expression and law and order in the country. Where are we heading for, indeed?

Before eradicating the terrorism in north eradicate the terrorists in the so called democratic govt of SL. Cowards...

Its disgrace and a shame. Firsts it was Keith Noyhar, who was nearly murdered by the goons, and now the couregous Editor of the Leader Lasantha Wickramatunge. The world is watching and know the real culprits. I had the pleasure of working with Lasantha and Keith, when I was a sports writer in the Sunday Times in the nineties. May Lasantha rests in peace. Roger from Canada

My deepest sympathies for Lasantha's family. All peace loving people should unite together change the current regime . If not more disasters will follow.

A GREAT LOSS RIP LASANTHA
Posted By: LOUIS
Under the guise of war on terror and eliminating ltte, GOSL regime is full of corruption, undemocratic and unleashes war on its own citizens. Lasantha is the latest example of this. Is war on terror(as iterpreted by the States) a license to silence all democratic voices as well?.This shows the impotence of the opposition parties and the educated elites in Sri Lanka unless they have all emigrated. May God save SL if he is allowed to live.

I wrote the following quote from Martin Niemoller as a comment to Daily Mirror when Dutugemunu ran riot at PachaWahini, and it is appropriate again: "First they (Nazis) came for the Jews and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the communists and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for me - and by then there was no one left to speak out for me." This is what is going to happen to the public that continues to applaud the government because of "war" ignoring the irreparable damage they are doing to the country all around. Sad, and it makes me ashamed to be a Sri Lankan!

How sad! This govt. has silenced another journalist.... Either one may agree with his views or not, every person has a right to express his opinion. But, unfortunately this govt. has taken away that right from the ppl too.... Chinthanayata Jayaweva!

We all know the culprits but we don't want to say it. Because we fear our our lives (Media Freedom in Sri Lanka)

For the people who say that Lasantha supported UNP, its not true, refer the archives and you will find how he screwed up UNP in 2002. Refer to recent articles you will find how he screwed up JVP, PA LTTE and UPFA. He was just publishing the facts, a great analysist and a man of our time.

I feel sorry for his family. why most of the comments directing finger toward gov. We dont know for sure who killed him, do u, if u do pls tell the police. Dont make it a habbit man. But whoever killing people with a family will rot in hell. He was fearless but ..... .i dont know.

Good Bye sweet prince... personally i didn't like his style of exposing facts, but he was one brave guy... I think the article you wrote comparing Zimbabwe to Sri Lanka ( Which is true indeed) lead to the ultimate. Sad to see the media minister still there ...
Posted By: dilshan
Oh LORD! let him re-born in Sri Lanka, for us to have, such a brave hero.

The JVP are back in the government. What do you expect

It’s another sad day for all Sri Lankan, those who have supported for this act, those who behind this killing and those have done this should remember that we all die one day. They all think that this killing can be hidden from the people but Almighty God knows who have done this. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. We trust people and bring them to power they all do the same.

I am devastated. As Tamils we have been violently treated and we have come to accept this.Yet we cannot comprehend the killing of Lasantha. An Oak has been felled. An irreplacable treasure. The man with a pen not a gun. What has happened to freedom of speech, debate, discussion, consensus, reasoning, human rights and justice and the noble precepts of the Lord Buddha, the non violent message of Hindu and Christian teachings.Alas , Lasantha may you Rest in Peace.

''We reap what we sow'' It is we, the people including the media, who are responsible for creating these politicians who have ultimately turned out to be monsters engulfing the nation and also a hopeless opposition capable of doing nothing for the common man. The paper, Sunday Leader too sowed only hatred among people, and was clearly partial. (not to mention Sirasa/MTV and government media). Anyhow, silencing of dissent will do no good to our nation. This destruction will go on until we wake up from our honeymoon with dum party politics and reject these prostituting politicians in both sides.
Posted By: Devasiri
Yes he was a courageous man.But do not forget that he had many enemiies from both parties as he gave no quarters to all corrupted politicians and busineesmen regardless of their political affiliations. It is too early to point finger at the governemnt alone at this stage as there are too many dirty fellows in the political arena whose sole aim is to fish in the murky waters.
Posted By: Jins
He was an another selfish and partial media personality. I used to respect him before he come to the USA with Mr. Ravi Karunanayaka on the way to Mexico in 2003. I think that he was thinking that the UNP will bring every success to Sri Lanka.

Very unfortunate, our society should learn how to live with dissenting voice. Lashantha is a fearless man and fought against a powerful regime. One day the perpetrators have to face the same destiny. My deepest sympathies to the bereaved family of Lashantha.
