WHY WE JUST DEBATE WITH SOME ISSUES

Dear all,

I find this forum is not much effective as it doesn't convince anyone. people keep on debating what is their thinking is correct and what is their faith is correct based on their assumptions.

I Feel rather than we argue each other, why don't we arrange our scholars to meet and have public lectures in which we can have Question and answer session as well. I think this will be effective as they are well learned people who can give better convincing answers than us.

Please share your ideas, if you are convinced we will arrange our scholars to meet some where and let them have a friendly discussion rather than a debate.

Thanks.

It's a known principle in psychology that people only strengthen whatever the view they held after an argument.

I like some lectures on Buddhist doctrine and meditation. But I prefer to have it by someone who practices seriously and honestly, rather than 'scholars'. I believe no amount of theory can clarify things as much as someone who has practical experience.

Then why dont you find some one from your side and we also will find some one for open discussion..hope this will be helpful for everyone.

Let me ask you a question mr. I love sirilanka. Why do you have to debate about other peoples faith and beliefs? does it really matter to you? people like you make other people kill each other over religion. I believe no religion on this earth teaches people to do bad things they always teach people how to live and how to help each other. So what is the point of these debates and most of all what are you tryin to achieve?

From MY side and YOUR side??

I'm not interested in learning Islam or comparing religions so I'm not in need of lectures in Islam or 'open discussions'. If you want to learn Buddhism/Christianity perhaps someone can help you find a teacher.
But then, a pot has to have enough room and upright in order to be filled.

Maybe a formal moderated debate at a university is a good idea.

    a formal moderated debate???? why

Some people like to look at all the religions objectively, compare and contrast, solely for academic interest. Such people will benefit from a formal, moderated debate. On the other hand, some people want to force their religion on to others, and their 'debates' are aimed at this. It isn't going to serve much purpose other than disharmony within a community. But when such people are not part of that community, they don't mind.

I have the same idea. Why can't people just give up their petty differences and be together. would it kill anyone to have a decent conversation with another man from another religion :)

Exactly. We feel that way because, in Sri Lanka, we live in harmony with people from different backgrounds. But someone with an interest in spreading his own religion, and killing everybody else, want to see us separated and fighting with each other. My suspicion is, these people are not even Sri Lankans.

It doesn't take a genius to see who starts all the 'wars' inside EK. Just read those answers in that thread for Christians- Just how many of the repliers are Christian/Catholic? If a non Christian answers in that discussion, then they should respect the Christian view-respect is not the same as acceptance. I feel the thread was started by a non Christian in order to start a fight with the Christians.

respect the Christian view-respect is not the same as acceptance - Amen to that. See I don't want to argue with people who won't respect others and their religions.

    Hello! Look who is talking!!

If you want to understand Buddhism, then the only way is to follow it and see, because it's not a religion of believing. If the lay Buddhists in EK don't agree with certain aspects of the religion or have doubts, that's because they are not in the path. A complete understanding comes through acquiring Buddhism into self and seeing for oneself. Therefore our knowledge and understanding is incomplete. Buddhism is not a religion one can learn by memorizing a particular religious text.

I am sorry to tell you, you people dont know how many scriptures u have? for instance i asked someone once your scriptures he sent me a link which has only one page and he said it is not yet translated in English as well.1st u explain about buddhism to one who want to learn, before you tell some one to follow and see.
of course no religions can be learned by only memorizing the text.it is not only character of buddhism.
