WIFI network configuration

I have a desktop pc which runs on XP SP3 and a laptop which runs on Win7 ultimate. Machan I want to create a wifi network to basically transfer files within these two PCs. (peer-to-peer connection, right?)

The laptop has it's own built-in wifi. For the desktop, I use a D-link wifi adaptor.

Can you help me to do the configurations on both devices?

But one thing to clarify. The data transfer speed is (according to Tera Copy) 2MB/s. Is this correct?
