Who are the greatest spinning rivals of all times? I would say Murali and Warne!! Two of the greatest spinners the game has ever seen and greatest bowlers in general I may say!! But who is the best??

Now that Shane Warne has already bowed out of his test career having achieved 700 scalps to his name, the man bows out as the top test wicket taker and the 1st to get there!! (thankful to Tsunami, that held back 1 whole year of Murali & SL Cricket)

Anyway... Murali now seems to have no competition at all for the most test wickets record, though he is 34 wickets behind Shane Warne, at the current rate of wicket taking Murali should easily over take Warne within the next 6 tests this year! (provided he remains healthy and fit).

OK! the main query is will he reach that magical.... virtually unbreakable.... in the past eras cricketers thought was impossible.... that 4 figure mark under his wickets column ? A 1000 TEST WICKETS!!!! (Damn!! that's a LOT)

If Murali is to reach there at the current rate.. Provided that SL gets 10 Tests per year (2006 SL got 11 Tests), he'll have to play another 55 matches to reach the target so if all goes well it'll be in another 6 years time (or in 6th year from now!) that we'll see the magical moment!!! And he age will be 40 at that time!!

What's your opinion will he reach there??

  • Murali will get about 200 more in about 25-30 tests in 2-3 years. He'll retire in the same age as Warne does. He may take another 70 oneday wickets and break Wasim's record and then retire from ODIs (may be one more year after WC 2007). Murali will have 900 test wickets and 500 ODI wickets when he is retiring

Yes do have a point! what you are saying is very likely to happen! Murali will take 1000 wickets if all goes perfectly!! And if he plays another 5/6 years as gets closer to his 40s his fitness also will be a concern! It's a bit sad that SL doesn't get enough tests like Australia does! I checked the stats... and surprisingly enough 2006 is the first time since 2000... that SL played more tests (1 test more) than Aussies! and that could well be due to upcoming World Cup... maybe Aussies wants to rest their major players!

Anyway.. the only hope we have is that we'll get more test matches in times to come and Murali to stay in the arena until 2011 World Cup, which I think he will... because the next World Cup will be hosted in the sub-continent... and last time they hosted it.. we bought the cup home!!!!

  • Well 2011, will be bit late for Murali. He has served us a lot and he will serve us until 2009-10 maximum. After that he have to hand over the responsibilities to younger players. As a consequence of Murali, see how many spinners were "killed". The list starts with Muralis compatriots Piyal Wijetuga, Ruwan Kalapage, Upul Chandana, Kumar Dharmasena, Kaushal Lokuarachchi, Malinga Bandara, Rangana Herath and most importantlt Nimesh Perera (who could have been the worlds best ever slow bowling all rounder) So we don't want to keep Murali for such a long time where we will not have any spin bowling resources, so he must retire when he's reaching 37-38 in my opinion.

Well.. I will agree with you on this note.. which is, if you are saying that SL selectors might have neglected other spinners because Murali is playing (Cuz he is a one man army himself)

But, if you are saying it's Murali's fault... well.. I disagree on that. Cuz, its the administration that must pave the path for these young spinners!! I wonder whether they can foresee the picture right now, that International exposure of Sri Lanka's spin attack is only revolving around Murali and after his retirement SL spin bowling is back to "square one"!

The admins and selectors have bought up Malinga and gave him the necessary experience.. they played him along side experienced players like Vaas, it worked out... they could have done the same to couple of spinners that you've mentioned above.. they should have played them along side Murali, give more experience.. Murali is a performer... there is no way he can be left a side to give chance to a newcomer there is no logic in it, Murali.... like the rest of them earned his place, and went though a lot of ups and downs.... and as long as he serves right, he deserves to stay there!! but there were others who failed that could have been replaced by these youngsters!!

In my opinion, Murali should serve as long as he can for SL, and the selectors and the governing body must find a way to slide in these spinners, and give them enough experience and exposure to international level!!!
