While trying to update windows, I got the error - Windows update encountered an unexpected error. Code 80248015

First I got it in a Widows 7 comp.
Now I got it on a Vista comp.
    Both windows copies are genuine.

    Any ideas ?
If you got it and solved it, please give me some ideas as to the solution
Or a link to web page that gives the steps to follow.

Am sorry if this is a re-post.
I tried searching Elakiri Forums - Either the search page hangs or there is some error on the search page.
If this has been discussed in this forum, please post a link to it.

I searched Google for it. Tried some of the solutions suggested, including running Microsoft Fix-it. Did not solve the problem so far. Searching and trying other solutions.

I did not want to disable the firewall and test windows update and very reluctant to do so. Am using windows firewall on both comps. Last time many years ago I connected a machine to the internet without a firewall running and I got a virus. :baffled:
If you solved the problem by disabling the firewall, let me know.
But heck, if I have to stop windows firewall to fix windows update problems ..... :P

Also anyone using any third party software to download and install windows updates on vista and win7 without the bothersome microsoft update service, please let me know.

    thanks

The step to rename the SoftwareDistribution folder solved the problem in Vista

Interesting to note that microsoft checkSUR (system update readiness tool) and SFC (system file checker), both reported no errors.
Fix-it downloaded via windows help for the error in windows update, reported "default windows update data locations have changed" and said it is fixed, but did not solve the problem. Also fix-it center, when run for win update errors, stops with an unexpected error itself

Will check the Win7 comp next.
