Windows Vista RC1 - who installed it?

I did. I just did. Still haven't configured it as I had XP. Still haven't installed any programs either. Will tell you guys how things work out, unless other people have their opinions posted before me. But all are welcome to post their experience, so maybe someone can help resolve a particular problem the poster faced.

I installed it in a dual boot setup. By this I don't mean that I'm only gonna use Vista as a test OS. The other OS I have installed is XP, and this is just to change certain things of Vista that I can't do within Vista (eg: mount a partition in the D:\Users folder to keep the profiles seperated in case I need to reformat), and also for a failsafe in case Vista goes haywire.

People with nVidia cards, don't install the RC1 drivers that are available at nVidia's website. People have claimed that the GUI ran slower than before, after installing those drivers. I don't know what impact it has on the gaming though. Anywa, try to play safe, as IMO, this OS is more fragile than XP.

i don't know about you guys, but it's working for me. i pasted the link in Flashget and it's downloading at top speed.

Most software work well with Vista RC1. There were incompatibilities with some of the well known software suites for XP, but I could find alternatives to all the categories.

However, the gaming performance was terrible. Maybe still a bit better than the previous builds. But since my video card is not a good (fast) one, I can't afford even a 5% drop in performance. So I gave up Vista. Back to XP. XP is still very fast to get the things done; not to say that the performance of Vista is not good, but MS have increased the number of steps you need to follow, to get certain taks done.

Remember, in 64-bit Vista, you can't install any of the unsigned drivers. So if Vista doesn't have the driver in its driver base or windows update doesn't provide new driver or the manufacturer doesn't provide signed drivers, you are screwed

One more thing. If you have a single core CPU or one that doesn't at least support Intel Hyperthreading, then you might want to change the Searching and Indexing performance in Power Options (go into Advanced settings) to the lowest. Otherwise, explorer.exe will try to index and extract metadata from files stored in your PC, even when the PC is not idle.

No workaround???? damn!!! Good thing I cant upgrade to vista. Got 'financial' constraints

Yup. There is no workaround. It would simply not allow you to install the driver. But it has a larger driver base than the 32-bit Vista.

I wanted to give a shot at it in a different angle. I upgraded a fresh install of XP, to Vista RC1.
before that, I installed NOD32 and PerfectDisk in XP, which are not compatible with Vista. Then I ran Vista Upgrade Advisor. It didn't say that those two appz are incompatible with Vista.
However, after the upgrade, they didn't work. Maybe Vista Upgrade Advisor is not that reliable when it comes to software.

I first thought Windows Defender was stopping it (NOD32) from starting up, but even when I disabled Windows Defender, it still didn't startup.
