Microsoft could pull the trigger on putting out a beta of the first service pack for Windows Vista any day with a final release by November, sources close to the company said. Microsoft has been mum about exactly what will be included in Windows Vista Service Pack 1, a rollup of updates for the OS, many of which are pushed out automatically through its Web-based update services. The company also has not said when the software will be in final release -- the latest from the company revealed only that a beta will be out sometime before the end of the year. The WinBeta.org blog reported Tuesday in a post that Microsoft 's WDK (Windows Driver Kit) team sent out an e-mail to beta testers that a new build of the WDK was being released to them to coincide "with the recent OS beta release for Vista SP1 Preview," hinting that SP1 beta is soon to be sent to testers.

Others speculate Microsoft might release the SP1 beta Thursday, the day it will report the company's fiscal 2007 fourth quarter and year-end financial results. In an interview Wednesday, one source close to the company said he had been told by insiders that a beta of SP1 would be out by now, so an imminent release is highly likely. And another source said that beta testers report SP1 will definitely be out this week with a final release coming in November or December.

Hopefully this week....

But I wouldn't count on it. Maybe it will be next week or the week after. Though I really hope they release it asap.

So? These days, the final versions are so buggy that I don't see much of a difference between beta, rc and retail editions :D

See what I mean:
No Public Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta anytime soon

Microsoft asked us to inform you on the current state of Windows Vista SP1 beta: "There will be a Windows Vista service pack and our current expectation is that a beta will be made available sometime this year. Service packs are part of the traditional software lifecycle — they’re something we do for all Microsoft products as part of our commitment to continuous improvement, and providing early test builds is a standard practice that helps us incorporate customer feedback and improve the overall quality of the product.

Service packs are just one example of the work we do to constantly improve the Windows experience. We also deliver improvements to Windows via Windows Update, which is an excellent channel for providing our customers with the most significant updates as they happen. And, since Windows Vista launched, we have continued working with partners to improve overall device coverage and application compatibility. There are now more than 2.1 million supported devices and more than 2,000 logoed applications for Windows Vista. We think customers will have a great experience using Windows Vista today.”

So the only release that's occurring is a limited Beta to a very small, very select group of advance customers. A public version of the Beta is not being released this week, nor next, nor in July, nor anytime in the immediate future.

Please use Open Source OS like CentOS FreeBSD Fedora_Core

    Do You Know:

IE 7 is a Clone of Firefox 2?

    Need Comments...
Please use software to make life easier, not harder. Use OSS only if they comply with this requirement, not just because "some" people say so.

IE7 is not a clone of Firefox. There are clones of Firefox available, but IE is definitely not one of them. For example: Flock is a clone of Firefox.

There are some funny firefox clones out there. for eg: Debian has IceWeasel
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceweasel
    http://packages.debian.org/unstable/web/iceweasel

This is what Debian has to say on their firefox clone, I find it hilarious.
Iceweasel is a redesign of the Mozilla browser component, similar to Galeon, K-Meleon and Camino, but written using the XUL user interface language and designed to be lightweight and cross-platform.
This browser is based on the Firefox source-code, with minor modifications. Historically, this browser was previously known as Firebird and Phoenix.

On topic of OS OS [Open Source Operating Systems] I think a new user must start with Ubuntu or PCLinuxOS. It's good just for the sake of experiencing some thing different to M$. Or try a LiveCD. When you get some linux on your bag you can go for Slackware or Gentoo.

As you say the software must meet user requirements. I think everything needed for an average user is included in a linux distro. I find ubuntu quite hassle free unlike win xp [I never went for vista] Actually now I don't use ubuntu at all but Zenwalk which is based on Slackware.

There are problems if you want games. That's a weak point of Linux. If you're into games better stick with windows.

    What the hell I'm writing.
I'm a self styled promoter of Linux and my crappy install instructions are responsible for erasing many of my friends harddrives.
