Its today we come by vehicles and many other means of easy traveling but early in sri lanka mostly people traveled by foot or simple carts this make them little bit tired so they used to invite those people with a glass of water So they can wet their throat before go to dinning table.
2 many of them eat chew of beetle early ( both men and women) so they need a glass of water before go to eat
3 we have a habit of washing hands, face before sit on the dinning table.
PS when I was 14 years old I was invited to a big girl party one of my friends place there they offered me a glass of water. Actually at that day I didn't know what to do with this glass of water
