Sri Lanka enlists a 10-man off-field team including a “shadow coach” for Twenty-20 showpiece
Sri Lanka has created a world record in cricket by having as many as ten employees to form an off-field team, just one short of a playing eleven for next month’s Twenty-20 World Cup in England.
Included in the ten will for the first time be someone called a “shadow coach” which goes to former batsman Chandika Hathurusinghe.
The rest that make up the 10 members are Brendon Kuruppu (manager), Trevor Bayliss (coach), Paul Farbrace (assistant coach), Tommy Simsek (Physiotherapist), Nalin de Alwis (Computer Analyst), Jade Roberts (trainer), Lal Thamel (masseur), Manoj Abeywickrema (fielding coach), and an unnamed selector.
Analysts are already frowning on the huge off-field contingent unable to fathom out the logic. “Mind you Sri Lanka won the World Cup in 1996 with just a coach (Dave Whatmore) and why you need 10 backstage people to condition the team is a big puzzle”, said one analyst.
“Nowhere in the world is any sporting team known to have a shadow coach which is bound to raise questions”, he added.
Sri Lanka will play against Australia and the West Indies before qualifying for the Super Eight stage.
Non-playing squad: Brendon Kuruppu (Manager), Trevor Bayliss (Coach), Paul Farbrace (Assistant Coach) , Tommy Simsek (Physiotherapist), Jade Roberts (Trainer), Nalin De Alwis (Computer Analyst), Lal Thamel (Masseur), Chandika Haturusinghe (Shadow Coach), Manoj Abeywickrama (Fielding Coach) and a Tour Selector.
Playing squad: Kumar Sangakkara (Captain), Muttaih Muralidharan, Sanath Jayasuriya, T.M. Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardana, Chamara Silva, Angelo Mathews, Ajantha Mendis, Nuwan Kurasekara, Thilan Thushara, Lasith Malinga, Isuru Udana, Fervez Maharoof, Jehan Mubarak, Indika de Saram
