“Keep the faith!”
Checkpoint caught up with Yashan for a chat about his future plans
A: My Name is Yashan De Silva and I am 21 years old. I was born on August 12, 1986
Q: What have you been up to these days?
A: I’m doing great. My latest song Bamba Kotapu Hinda with Santhush is getting heavy airplay on radio. I released the third single of my album last week on YFM and also the music video for it on Looks Like, Sirasa TV. The song is titled Sanda Gaman Yana and features Irangi. Furthermore, I’m doing my radio show Saturday Hot Beat on Saturdays, 9 a.m.-11 a.m. on YFM and my TV programme Mix Bag is rolling on Sundays at 4 p.m. on Sirasa TV.
Q: What are your future plans?
A: Well, for now it’ll be the launch of my debut solo album – the hottest party this year in 2008 (laughs). I’ll be doing it at Tramp, Galadari. For the next two three years I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing and I want to improve myself as a good hip hop artiste and a TV/radio presenter. I also plan to do a hip hop movie.
Q: How did you get into this field?
A: I have been a big hip hop fan since I was 13 years old. And I have always been listening to the sounds of many artistes like Dr. Dre, Eminem, Royce Da 5’9, Timbaland, Fabolous, Lil’ Wayne, The Lox, Nelly, etc…
I participated in a lot of Interact school events and talents shows in 2000-2003. It showed me the path to perform at bigger concerts like BnS Neththara, YFM anniversary show, Reach Out 2, 3 and 4, Winter Flames, Sirasa Sundown concert, etc… To date I have played at nearly 350 high profile events. It was a long and hard journey to get to the position that I’m in right now.
Q: What do you believe in?
A: I always believe in God. Every time that you go through pain and struggle, the closer you are getting to your goal. I just stay focused on my life goals and I give first place to God in whatever I do. But sometimes situations can be really bad. Yet I have the patience. I never give up! I know where I’m coming from and I know where I’m going.
Q: What are the most important things in your life?
A: First of all God, then my parents and my music career.
Q: Could you describe your childhood?
A: I was a naughty boy. I was playing all around when I was schooling. I went to St. Anthony’s College, Kandy. I was notorious during my school years, mainly because of all the naughty things I used to do. But my mom and dad, between all the complaints from teachers, always stood by me and took good care of me. So this big shout out goes to them.
Q: Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
A: Now that’s a tough question. But hopefully I’ll be rich and famous, enjoying life to the fullest with my family.
Q: What is your advice to teens in Sri Lanka?
A: Cash rules everything around us. So work hard everyday. Get your hustle on. Improve your talents and get the most of it. But remember, study about it before you do something. And the other most important thing is, think positive always. Things will work out for you someday. Keep the faith!
Q: What’s your message to your fans?
A: I appreciate all the love and support. My album will be coming out this month.
I’m also going to continue to make a lot of new moves in the future. Stay tuned!
