Relaxing, eco-friendly hotel deep in the forests of Kithulgala

The River Resort is a great value four bedroom hotel hidden away in the lush hills around Kithulgala. A twenty minute drive on windy country roads from Kithulgala town, it is a great place to sit back and relax and enjoy the fertile landscape of the wetlands as the river flows past your balcony. For the active there are many walks in the jungles and plantations which border the hotel - the staff will help you plan a route to suit. The main attraction is white water rafting on the Kelani River which runs through Kithulgala itself. There are also caves in the area, an ancient temple and plenty of flora and fauna.

The hotel is eco friendly and has a great fresh-water swimming pool which overlooks the river as it flows over the rocks. Electricity is hydro-generated. The rooms are large and cozy, with excellent, spacious bathrooms. All rooms come with mini-bar and lounge furniture and log fireplaces in case it gets chilly in the night. There is an eclectic mix of artwork, books and furnishings around the hotel. A tastefully designed restaurant also overlooks the river and serves a variety of reasonably priced dishes. Sofas and cushioned chairs are spread around the lounge area which also has a piano. The staff are friendly and hospitable and the atmosphere of the hotel in general is extremely relaxing.

The River Resort is ideal for families or couples. Perfect for energetic types who want to explore the diverse and fertile regions of the wetzone. The River Resort is within three hours drive of Colombo and can be built into an itinerary on the way to or from the 'Hill Country'.

Comfortable camping in stunning Puttalam District

This excellent new permanent camp close to Puttalam offers the chance for guests to be close to nature without eschewing holiday comforts.

Each of the six tents is built on a stilted wooden platform underneath the shady canopy of the trees. The floors are polished wood and the coconut timber beds are extremely comfortable. Solar power provides the light, while the tents come well equipped with mini bars and bookselves. Bathrooms are built with polished concrete and are situated behind each of the tents.

The real beauty of the place is the huge space afforded to the guests - in a truely off-the-beaten track location. Few visitors ever see this side of Sri Lanka - but the dry zone forest area is beautiful and remote and here you are fully able to appreciate this. There is even a pool thankfully - as this area can get extremely hot.

There are superb excursions organised by the incredibly knowledagble manager, Sid, including a local wetlands tour, a facinating 'origins' tour and a sea safari to nearby Wilpattu.

This is a unique place in a fascinating and unvisited area.

Comfortable eco lodge on the border of the Sinharaja Rainforest

Perched overlooking the Sinharaja Forest, The Rainforest Edge is an quality eco lodge providing a new option for those wishing to explore this area of unique bio-diversity. The lodge's seven rooms are designed with both comfort and the environment in mind, with a combination of natural and more permanent materials used in the construction. Each room has a private verandah from which to admire the spectacular view. The bathrooms have both covered and outdoor areas, with solar powered hot water and quality fittings. The rooms themselves are spacious and restful, with wood-paneled ceilings and practical polished cement floors. Located on the edge of the village of Veddegala, from your perch high up you can view the human activity that accompanies both the sunrise and the sunset.

The infinity pool is surely one of the most charming and inviting in the island. Constructed in the centre of the Lodge, it is the perfect place to unwind after a day of hiking in the forest or a place to while away the day itself. Flanked by lotus flower gardens and with spectacular views, the calm waters are the perfect place to admire the forest and resort while the shifting sun provides a spectrum of colours all around. Sun loungers can be erected in the shallow areas and there is a shady hut located next to the pool to read or doze in. There are also large swing-loungers to gently admire the view from.

Rooms are sold on full board basis, with hearty Sri Lankan food served daily. Tasty fresh vegetables and fruit are sourced entirely from the organic farms in the local area, and a standard meal here includes a plethora of curries and other local dishes. Try the fired garlic snack - the staff's "secret of the forest". The staff also prepare herbal teas and nutritious health drinks to go with breakfasts and dinners. The dining areas are covered with sloping coconut cadjan roofs and also house comfortable cushioned relaxation areas.

The Rainforest Edge has an excellent Ayurvedic centre, with highly qualified doctors and therapists. The treatment rooms are built entirely from natural materials and embody the power of the natural habitat in which the lodge is located. This would be a great place for people looking to experiment with an Ayurvedic course of a week or more, as the environment is so relaxed and peaceful. The flower and mud-baths here must have the best views of any in the island - privately located at the rear of the lodge overlooking the mountain ranges and forests below. A variety of treatment courses can be booked in advance.

The friendly and attentive staff will be keen to show you some of the trails in the surrounding area, walking you to secluded waterfalls which are ideal for swimming, however exploring the Sinharaja should be more than enough for most. All in all, The Rainforest Edge is an excellent eco lodge and provides a welcome new accommodation option in this most remote and beautiful area of Sri Lanka.
