Zeolites are microporus minerals exhibiting ion-exchange & absorbent properties. The name is derived from Greek ζέω (“zeo”, to boil) and λίθος (“lithos”, stone) meaning “boiling stone”. The natural origin of Zeolites is volcanic.

The structure of the zeolites mainly consists of alumino-silicates with SiO4 and AlO4 structures connected by shared oxygen atoms. Clinoptilolite is one of the most abundant natural Zeolites.
Here are a few from the family of Zeolites - Analcime, Phillipsite, Faujasite, Erionite & Clinoptilolite.
Not all Zeolites are safe. In particular, Erionite is associated with lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma - extremely carcinogenic.

However, Clinoptilolite has been studied to be quite safe. It's the unique 3D framework lattice structural feature that accounts for their well-known microporous quality. Depending on the pore size and absorption properties, Zeolites are among the most important inorganic cation exchangers and are used in industrial applications for water and waste water treatment, catalysis, nuclear waste, agriculture, animal feed additives, and in biochemical applications.
The Japanese used it after Fukushima for radio-active cleanup of water and the sea and also in Chernobyl. Ukraine shipped millions of tons to Russia after the disaster.

Clinoptilolite has been used mostly for veterinary use and recently on humans. Studies done on animals show that it has beneficial effects specially on cows and pigs.
Clinoptilolite has interesting antioxidant, hemostatic, and anti-diarrheic properties that may be exploited in human medicine, especially as adjuvants to standard therapies. However, the number of clinical studies with Clinoptilolite materials on humans is still low, but massive advertising campaigns are not short. As I mentioned before on another post, the supplement industry is worth several Billions of Dollars annually.

Nobody has any idea how it works in the human body exactly. But as I said before it's considered to be safe. But the FDA classes it as GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) and have restrictions on it's use. AFAIK only FDA approves use is on Medical Dresssings to control bleeding. A lot of dressings in use for military (ever heard of QuikClot) has zeolites to stop bleeding because of it's hemostatic properties. Also there really is a treatment for squamous cancer that uses zeolites as a delivery agent but these are far different from taking it in an oral pathway.

But many people believe and spend millions on "Detox Supplements".
