ESTATE WORKERS BETRAYED THROUGH NEW AGREEMENT, CLAIMES JVPc

The agreement that has betrayed the estate workers has to be nullified and the workers provided with a wage which is suitable to the cost of living, the JVP says.


The party in a release accuses that, while the agreement provides the workers with only a minor increment in their daily wages, it also agrees not to increase their wages for another 2 years.


Not only is the signed collective agreement an unjust one, it is also a grave betrayal and deception of the estate workers, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) states.


Plantation Trade Unions and the Private Tea Factory Owners Association jointly singed the new agreement to increase the daily wage of estate workers yesterday (June 06).


The basic daily wage of an estate worker was increased from Rs.285 to Rs.380 while the total daily wage, including all other allowances, was increased from Rs.405 to Rs.515.
