dexter ends it season in december and starts the next season in september....
covert affairs follows the same pattern...
blockbuster series sort of follows the pattern you mentioned
House, Lost, Glee and so on
they finish the season around May and start the next season around september of the same year....
even X files followed the same pattern...

but machan Dexter had a proper ending, hes single again and that's a great platform for the new season, but GOT ends in middle, its like teaching to swallow sword in 5 episodes the war started, new king, kalisi has a massive army and 3 dragons i have a strong feeling the season 2 will be the same

when it comes to TV series i have my limitations, i always try to watch all series and episodes before comes to a conclusion, have watched GOT, Dexter, Burn Notice, Castle and modern family, A to Z and from that group GOT tops then comes Dexter, still unable to watched the list u have mentioned above, but managed to watch few episodes here and there. when it comes to cartoons my list tops with Modern Family and Simpsons, south park is the worst piece of shit ever

2 - the series got a confirmed next season so the producers doesnt have to come up with an ending.

Series gets a complete ending when its sure not to have a next season and series gets an ambiguous ending when there's some certainty that there will be a next series but its not confirmed while the series is in production.

they do it to hold the curiosity..
in season 2 house...you'll be astounded of the season finale..as a dude comes and shoT house in point blank.
at season 3, it ends by house firing his whole team..sort of like in the middle.
then in season 4 house inadvertently kills his best friends girl friend..
in house season 5 finale...house having a psychotic break and leaves us

if u were to have watch x files, if you feel like this...you might wanna kill chris dude for keepin u long..
its a technique they use in TV series...
from smallville to x files to Game of thrones....
its understandable..
i havent watched Game of thrones...

but they should have started the season 2 soon after season 1 ends. 1st season played on 2011 and the 2nd season will be on 2012 is a huge disappointment for GOT fans
